See it works using Peltier effect. These are electronic devices that heat and cool depending on which way the voltage is applied. Problem is they take lots of current to work well and hence why DC connector prob melted. Maybe not intended for constant use? I had a freezing kit once that froze pipes. It used these and was drawing many amps. The device will only reduce the temp by so many degrees so the heat it transfers is sucked away by cooling pipes like a heatsink. That way it can go lower than ambient. Im guessing at that price it wont be engineered very well.More expensive units will use a compressor and gas like fridges etc. andrewsm2017-01-26 11:08:21

I've got a really top make one here, not sure if it works but there like £200+ new and it weighs like 13kg or something
I need to test it, how long would you need to leave it on before it starts collecting water though, I've left this on over night and nothing in the tank in morning, put it in bathroom after bath as its only place with loads of condensation

my Eco air will pull 2L of water a day in winter / humid days
my wall clock thing says the ambient humidity in my send is 50 - 60% but it still manages to pull that out of the air
I leave it on 24/7 just have to go empty it every day. I dont want to drill another hole to have the pipe outside
I got a cheap Babz one off eBay, only was about £35-£40 and uses a peltier as above. Runs off a supplied adapter (looks like a laptop charger!) Works fine though, I left it on for three days straight in my car a while ago, filled up the 2 litre bucket at least half way!
