Any recommendations for extremely easy game programming?

I don't really care which platform, from PC, Mac to iThingy, Android, online or whatever - I'm looking to "challenge" my (under 10 yr old) kids to storyboard, design, walkthrough and then "program" a game. Even something as stupid as getting a chicken to cross the screen and lay an egg...then wait 30 seconds for it to hatch.

"Winter is coming" - and we're looking for stuff to do with the kids.

When I look at the quality of what they get for "free" on iThingy - it's hard to even think where to begin...but I want them to "begin"....I grew up having to program on a Dragon32, it served me incredibly well.

My kids "take for granted" what they have on their Nintendo Switch or 3DS, iThingy etc.

I have toyed with the idea of getting the Vectrex32 or even a book on 6809 machine code for them - but that's probably a bit too harsh...

I don't actually mind doing the coding for them, although it would have to be something 'simple' they could follow...

Yes, my 9 year old son uses scratch and has made a few games. They can then share the games in a forum setting and can get feedback from other kids and the team at MIT.

He also uses Codebug http://www.codebug.org.uk/ which is like a kid version of a raspberryPi with a 5x5 led display for basic games in a handheld form.

If you've got an iPad definitely download Swift playgrounds. Really well made and has fun programming challenges with instant game updates. My 7 year old is learning Python on the Pi too. I also fired up the c64 the other day and she loved coding on that.Nes4life2017-09-04 07:11:41
