This has made me a little sad

An auction item I was watching from France has now got 20% VAT added to it.

Looks like I will have to think about buying from the EU now...

Photo is not what I was watching, but shows the 20%

I don't understand...what is this deal for then?
Only for the companies to save money not paying customs but private people have to pay VAT?

Or is it just Ebay not doing it right?

IMHO: EU will break apart...may it take 10 years or 30. I don't want part of my taxes being used to go to countries that give a sh*t about democracy or human (gay) rights! But I'm afraid that Germany will switch off the light in the distant future when it's the only country left in EU

In a similar vein . . .

I was about to buy some more PROMS from a seller in Bulgaria.
He has now disallowed purchases from the UK on his eBay page, directly because of Brexit.
I can't get them from him any more.

No idea . . .
Could even be simply lack of information.

Dear Chris,

Thank you for your interest!
I am really sorry to tell you that regular mail has suspended shipments to UK because of Brexit situation...
I am not sure how long this situation will continue...
Would you like me to let you know if any change? If you are not in a hurry, of course...

I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Regards,
Sofiya

ah, I thought the seller from Bulgaria would have decided that he won't sell to UK anymore.

I remember when I bought two shipping labels to USA and Canada two weeks ago, that DHL showed a little pop-up that shipping to UK is not possible at the moment. I don't know why, maybe it was due to the uncertain state...deal or no deal. But it's not there any longer. BUT prices for shipping to UK are now just the same as shipping to Switzerland....insane!!

Some Snes games I ordered prior to Xmas, were shipped from Germany, but the courier (in Germany) sent them back to the seller saying they had too many parcel and a backlog so sending it was not a possibility. Had me worried as the ebay tracking said delivered, despite me not getting it, seller has sent using another service, rather worrying looking at the tracking for that one, it says that was delivered yesterday (which it was not), tracking says it was delivered in Germany, I think back with the seller, it could be they are now rejecting parcels oversea.....and these Snes games will never reach me.

In terms of VAT - eBay (or any other company) are not supposed to be adding VAT to items under £135.

The change to collecting VAT at point of purchase not point of entry is new.

Business to business it doesn't get added of course.

"Businesses registered in EU countries and selling to UK customers can charge VAT at their domestic rate - but must register for VAT in the UK once they cross the VAT registration threshold."
I haven't read all the regulations but I don't see why this would have changed. A private seller is not required to pay VAT until they reach the VAT threshold. I don't think private sellers will be selling £85000 worth of SNES games every year.
