Had a real interesting conversation with a dick at ebay

Buyer wants to return an item to me saying it's not as described, ok nothing new there

Buyer is a liar and says it arrived and has 2 dents and it doesn't say this in the listing

Listing clearly states that it has couple of dents

So when I tell them this, first guy is great, he's agreeing with me, he can see dents in photo etc and it says in listing this too, passes me to another guy which they always do for 2nd opinion and he's is a complete t**ser

I explain all the same to him that I say to his colleague and he saying, so what are you expecting us to do, so my answer is, well close the case because the buyer is abusing the returns policy about the reason for not as described, now this is the killer

He says, we cant close the case because the seller says it's not as described and if the sellers is saying that, then he can return it for a refund, and quote "we don't get into is it or isn't it in the listing" "if the buyer says it's not described, it's all about the buyers experience and we want them to have a positive one"

So what he's telling me, it doesn't matter what you put in the listing, if they say not as described then they are right and he can return it.

Yet they have a thing about buyers misusing the returns policy and if they choose an option that's not as accurate to the case then they can act on it.

I said, so you might as well not put anything in your listing then, because buyers don't read or look at the pictures so no point wasting your time, also said no wonder loads of people don't use ebay anymore

That how they treat a 17 year valued customer and give you the concierge assistance so buyers can screw you over and they don't help

So you now have to vet the buyer basically, if you sell an item, message the seller, ask them if they have read the description, looked at the photo's, ask if they know it's in what ever condition and if they don't reply or you don't like the answer then I will cancel the transaction and relist and block the seller, not on every item, but one certain stuff like this that's big and potential to be returned because buyers are stupid, my god what a joke, truly shocking

This is why I stopped selling on eBay. I got so fed up of the bias towards buyers that I just quit. Refunds being made by eBay via PayPal at the time without the goods even being sent back. It’s not how it was since they started trying to become like amazon marketplace I my opinion.

I've been lucky and not had any problems, but then I haven't sold anything on ebay for several years.

High value stuff I always used to pick up in person

It used to be easier and fairer, but nowadays I find it easier to buy and sell via the forums. OK, you may not get the megabucks that you did when an auction went skywards, but you also get less hassle.

I just list now with the ebay fees added to the sale, if someone does full price then fine, but 99% of the time I let them haggle the ebay worth of fees off the price and do a cash outside of Ebay deal, win win really. No one but Ebay to blame for this.

what was it...

My business is on ebay and its a joke (ebay not my business
smiley29.gif
), Buyers even complain if they were not in for delivery, 1 guy said "I work 9-5pm every day, what do you expect me to do if I WORK!, the depot is 30 min away - Im extremely disappointed" - WTF?

Item supposed to be shipped within 24 hours and 24 hour delivery, I shipped same day, no thanks, no "that was quick" - nothing.

I could go on and on....

I have had to learn that its all part and parcel of selling on ebay.

Customers no longer greet, or try and be friendly, 5 years ago 1/10 were dicks, now 1/10 are polite and it highlights your day. Gone are the days of.." hi, Im just contacting because my item hasn't arrived, by any chance do you have the tracking, or could you update please?", now on average its like "MY ITEM IS STILL NOT HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!! REFUND ME IF NOT HERE TOMORROW AND I LEAVE YOU NEG!!!!!!!!"

I wish I had recorded it Alpha, I couldn't believe what the idiot was saying to me

I've got the original guy I spoke to supposed to be phoning me back today so we'll see what the outcome is

For all I know the moron that bought it, probably didn't check if it will fit on his car and just wants to return it because he's not got to pay, or he just didn't read the description and just lies in the hope I will refund him and he keeps it but that ain't happening

I once thought about doing it as a business on ebay, but how they treat sellers now is just unreal. No wonder they have to offer £1 selling fees to get people listing

If you look at 80% of the car dismantlers, they don't even sell the majority of the parts on ebay, all you see is Breaking Car, if you bid or buy you will get a wheel nut, contact me for items you want and then they deal direct, they loose I reckon 80% of business but it just seems to be the norm and accepted by ebay, if you did with say TV's you would have the stuff removed I bet

So you do things by the book and that's how your treated

Certainly feel for people like yourself Sb as a Business seller, can imagine what a nightmare it would be now

This all stems from they introducing the seller has to pay for items returned not as described, before that this wouldn't be happening with this item. But he can lie and even when stating something it does say in listing he will still probably be allowed to return it

I can't find anything with 100% answer either on large items, there is no details about them being returned, so it will be very interesting what label they will provide the buyer with to send it back, because most couriers won't even take it due to size

Your so right with the most peoples attitude these days too SB, it sucks when you only get people moaning, even if you get it posted straight away, I even clean everything I post, never get a thanks because of how nice the item arrives. don't know why I bother

I won't even post high value items any longer, it's not worth it on ebay so they are loosing tons of business

That's just sickening Sean, you just can't believe how they will screw us supposed Valued Customers over

So they have this stupid returns policy and according to what I've read, freight items or ones collected, they buyer should of made arrangements to return it, there is a section on it but again nothing is 100% clear how it works, because ebay haven't sorted out any proper solutions

One thing that is clear from most people you talk to now, ebay have screwed them over at some point and they now no longer use the site, don't sell anything, only buy or just sell low value items

Would be nice to get a message sometimes from buyers saying what a great item and arrived well packed but nothing these days, lucky if you even get feedback left

Ebay has a huge problem that they can't fix - that a significant %age of people are liars and scammers and their business model doesn't allow them to get in the middle of each and every transaction.

The feedback system is corrupt and doesn't inform anyone anymore.

I understand why their policies are so buyer-friendly, I've been ripped off 10s of times as a buyer and only once as a seller. There are a LOT of sellers out there just trying to make a quick buck.

Not that that excuses that being the norm - nor in your specific case where it's pretty easy to make a decision. Just highlighting that their service and business model are fundamentally flawed.

I'm astounded by this. There must surely be a point after a sale that it's assumed a buyer is happy with an item. 3 months seems way beyond what I'd expect for that. £650 is a fair stack of cash and you could've used it for anything in that time (and been completely in your right to do so). How eBay can still look to process a refund after that time I don't know.

Also to attempt to issue a refund without you having the item back
smiley5.gif

Sounds like a horrible situation Sean. Hope it gets resolved quickly. It should be a requirement that you at least have the item safely back in the condition it left you in before any refund can proceed.

I've been relatively lucky with eBay to date. So far my worst experiences have been non-paying bidders and people wondering why I'm not Amazon and can't post things the same day (maybe I have a full time job!?!?). In the back of my mind though I know it's only a matter of time before I'm screwed over because eBay makes it so easy for buyers to do it

Tin is dead right about the feedback system

You cant leave bad feedback for a seller which is true and valid to warn other people about the issues else they phone up ebay crying and if they speak to right person that day ebay remove the negative. So no point having feedback anymore

Staff at the Dublin call centre are legitimate assholes. Last year I withdrew four items of furniture, all damaged during a house move, and a fifth item (a collectible toy) was lost more recently. Now banned from selling on eBay. No negotiation, no acceptance, just condescension and passive aggressive intransigence from two people in quick succession at least half my age. Don't mind admitting the humiliation due to the latter fact. Scripted repetition to the point where, after 45 minutes, they were tripping over their own cheat sheets; spouting bizarre, surreal sentences like Johnny Cab in Total Recall. Hateful sh*t. Never again.

This is correct.

As a tangent, this is why if you sell anything with a classification of "used" it has to work. Words like "as-is" in the listing have no meaning to eBay. They do to a reasonable person, but eBay will side with the buyer if they file a case. Use "not-working/for-parts" if you're selling stuff that you have no idea works. Of course you're still open to a non-as-described claim.

However, the buyer is generally responsible for paying return shipping and if an item really is not-as-described and the shipping is considerable, this can suck ass for the buyer.

You will never get anyone from eBay, PayPal or (in the US, maybe different in UK) your credit card company to view photos and make a determination.

It's a "cost of selling". The same could happen if the transaction was through Paypal and also direct bill to Credit Card.

Thing is..

Sellers will always be where buyers are.

Look after the buyersSellers always there

Look after sellers, buyers dwindle. Its sh*t but its the way it is....

My concern is that us sellers, are pretty much ruled by, almost employed by ebay... but there is not even a union.

You can be a business with huge projects on, and ebay can then tell you, you have to do 2-3 months of 2 employees time to change stuff to suit there new system, and 1/2 way through change their mind.

A union for sellers to pay into is a good idea, to help argue the concerns of changes etc. give 1 big powerful voice.

Dealing with eBay or PayPal customer service is like sticking your arm into a meat grinder. That said, this should not be possible as per eBay policy buyer is required to return item within 5 days.

eBay is usually going to auto side with the buyer, but did you escalate with eBay? It sounds like you don't have funds for them to go after (PayPal) so they've sent it to collections. The buyer has to provide proof that the item was returned (trackable).

This said, it's all work to stand up for yourself.

It is hassle but I am not sure how you can end up with your funds refunded to them, and they have the product, unless you refuse to take the item back?
