Getting peed off with my gdrom drive and see these are down to 68 posted now !

I ge the GDUSB but far too much money !

I cant quite understand if I need to solder the GDEMU board or not seems optional, as its taking its power from the mobo pins. What do you solder it for , is that for disk swaps ???

I used to not really wnat one as heard reports they could get hot without a power mod.

But this seems really interesting when they come back in stock

https://www.retropsu.com/store/product/dreampsu/

Smaller and not so hot !

Good luck getting one, if the GDEMU orders are anything like the Phoebe/Rhea ODEs for the Saturn. Haven’t got a GDEMU myself but they seem positively reviewed. I think the GDUSB ripped off the GDEMU, so although it looks a little more user friendly, you might want to support the original maker...but like I said, the pre-ordering system isn’t the easiest.

There is the Chinese clone of the gdemu on Ali express & eBay that is of course a rip off of the original. As you say getting one of the original ones proves to be very difficult unless your waiting the second orders open each time...

If you are referring to the usb-gdROM then I don’t believe that has any relation to the gdemu, i understand it’s a unique designed device in its own right ...I’ve got one of the those and apart from only having the option to order it direct from a Russian website it is really superior in every way imo to the gdemu, it’s a truly brilliant device but it does cost more

In relation to the Dreamcast psu overheating issue people talk about, there is a simple resistor hack insertion on the 3.3v line if I remember right that is easy to implement and keeps the psu much cooler I have found...it’s never been an issue with heat in my experience after doing that....if you google it you will find the method

If you have a JVS cab like a new net city or Naomi there is a way to get a Dreamcast to run off the cabs psu, that’s my next thing to do as I’ve got the Dreamcast running vga output into my cab and it looks great....

The ones you’ve seen for £68 I’m assuming are the Chinese clones people are selling on eBay, pretty sure they are like only £50 on Ali express if you want to go down that route

My bad, misunderstood the GDEMU forum posts about clones, apologies to the maker of the USB-GDROM

Had not twigged they were clones, but makes sense as I could not order an original one assume he has so many pre-orders ! Also there is a note on a local one about "DONT UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE" !!

THe USB one from Russia I see constant rants about the developer. But great to hear you have one and its superior. I'll recheck price but as you say was bloody expensive !

Found someone local now to do my battery, so will look after that gets done tomorrow !

Never used aliexpress assume ok to use if I do go down that route. Need to make sure

My soldering is crap I dont mind the cost of the pico when its about TBH.

Wow did not think the dreamcast would be a no soldering for the resistor !!

Right time to look at if copy is decent or to wait and get something else.

I sold my GDEMU on here a couple of months back. it was an original though. Nice bit of kit.
no solder. just unscrew and unplug the GDROM drive and plug the ribbon cable into the GDEMU and screw it down.

he opens his order list every month or two but it usually gets filled pretty fast so you do need to be lucky.

I have no idea about the knockoffs though

Glad you found the resistor fix video, no soldering required just bend the legs in securely into the two connectors and its done, since i've done it on mine the heat levels is more than acceptable.

Ive bought quite a few things of Aliexpress over the years and has always been fine for me, some things can take time to get here as it is from China but that is understandable.

I have seen the posts of people ranting about that developer of the USB-gdrom one, from what I saw he used to sell them through a shop and they fell out big time and there seems to be some bad blood over it, his English is not great either but the product itself is excellent but yeah its a premium to pay.

John thanks for all your help mate, appreciate it.

All done now with a few teething issues with components.

Not cheap mind !

The 300 ohm 1/4 watt resistor I bought the legs were very very thin, i.e not that stiff so was bloody tricky to get them to stay in ! Its temporary as may get a dreampsu. £1

GDEMU v5.5 clone £62

3D printed tray £5

Software

Gui format . All tools pain in ass,his worked first time formatted to 128gb maximum cluster size.

Massheep SD card maker. Right pain in ass to find/download a working non-virus version. But got there in the end.

Battery replacement and power resold etc £13

Issues

Finding SD menu maker was a right pain. But I needed this as I thought games needed to have same file name and in folders 01, 02 etc

GDemu first of all only displayed 3 folders even though there were 93 folders.

This seemed to be fixed by using the exact GDmenu file that the supplier of the board emailed me.

This is not firmware just main menu.

3d printed tray. Wasted a good hour on this. It simply did not fit, level enough for my liking was too high. Tried trimming with a Stanley knife. Plastic is harder than you think compared to my now bleeding thumb !

I have had to resort back to not using the 3d tray, but with only two legs direct on the gdem now as snapped one getting it out to try and use the 3d tray :(

It seems better with 2 legs anyway as less push around the connector end

Memory card so far seems fine, although not gave it a proper blast yet .

Kingston SDS/128GB Canvas Select Class10 UHS-I Flash Memory Card, Black
Sold by: Amazon EU S.a.r.L.
£21.32

The good news is I did this all on my "faulty" DC to test, and is working so well it can stay in there !
