I was amazingly restrained when I got mine, pretty much the only 'big' spend was on my FTO (and it was only £800, plus a few hundred for insurance and tax), and that was partly because my old Calibra was on it's last legs as well.

I always sort of fancied a FTO, but every one seemed to have automatic transmission. Are manual transmission versions uncommon or something?

Yeh, not sure on the ratio ,but most made were Auto's, tho a fair few were converted. I was lucky to find a Manual near to me (actually not too far from RGP's, other way in Darwen...). I love it,great car.
