Get a bit fed up of hearing this to be honest, not because I don't care, more that I just don't see anyone that does really seem to care or do anything about it, also does it really exist?

They have been banging on about it for years now, 40/50 years

Watching Minder, arthur gets phone call from someone, complaining about alarm he sold being faulty, or maybe a of been Intercom system, something like that anyway his Answer was it's this Global Warming
smiley36.gif

First thing, there have been many changes over millions of years, we had Ice Age and things warmed up, did they say it's Global Warming, We have 2 Weeks of Hot Weather in Summer and there all saying get used to this if we don't do anything to stop Climate Change, Italy have Record Temp for a day and it's hottest since 1977, and they had a hot spell back then and another now, what about it

We have floods, which I have to say is upsetting to see, specially people that have suffered it many times, feel for them, but I can remember floods when I was a kid, there are a few areas near me that always floor, road does often but it's been no worse in last 20 years than I remember as a kid. near where one road always floods under bridge, I can remember half the park flooded, we went paddling in it, probably upto are knees, that was the whole field, still can picture the guy with his dingy rowing on it
smiley36.gif
I've never seen it flood since that week in 1980s

Who is going to do anything to really change things, is everyone going to stop going jetting all over the world going on holiday, stop going out for non essential trips in car, the roads the last few weekends around Birmingnam have been the worst I've ever known in last 10 years, just total nightmare the whole weekend

Are they going to stop wasting electricity, the try and make all consumers feel bad about leaving TV in Standby which uses very little power. while Shops, banks etc Have AirCon, Heating, Lighting, TV's, Computers, Printers, you name it left on all weekend 24/7 all year wasting Electricity on massive scale

Electric cars might change peoples health but they won't help planet with all the batteries that will be used and electricity to charge them

USA have had Catalytic Converters on Cars since the 1970's so why did we wait here till the 90's
smiley5.gif

Then you have City Centre Charging, So Birmingham claim they are charging people to go in the city centre to help enviroment and peoples health, great
smiley32.gif

So why then if you put in Reg of a Honda Insight Mk1 2000 year, one of the cleanest Petrol Engine cars probably still on the road and one of best on mpg, 1Litre Engine, lean burn with Electric Assist, it's under lowest Tax band there is for emissions and Free Tax as result, Birmingham are going to charge you for driving it in there "Clean Air Zone", but you can drive a Ford Cmax, Fiesta, Focus 1.6 from 2010 which throws out more emissions, just because it's newer?????

What a joke, so it's not about clean air, it's about getting older cars off road regardless of wether it's better or not

To me the whole thing doesn't make sense

i don't listen to any of this unless they talk about population as that what the problem really is

next big war will be about water and it looks likely it will be egypt against ethiopia

Makes perfect sense. Man in his infinite wisdom digs massive great holes in the earth, takes out the rocks and pillages the natural gases. Starts to burn them and creates poisonous gases that have a chemical and physical impact on the environment. What these gases have essentially done is to damage the protective layer in the atmosphere which essentially allows life to exist here.
This is a separate issue from the waste that goes into the ground and the sea which is destroying the planet. It’s all our fault of course, but inevitable really as greedy humans take over the planet. Not saying I’m in any way a saint as of course I have contributed to the effect in my own way, and continue to do every day.
To say that it’s not real or that we have had no effect on the environment is naive.

It’s the equivalent of sh*tting on your own doorstep.
Reducing waste and emissions is all we can do to try to restore any sort of equilibrium.SUPERSPRINT2021-08-19 10:28:40

I see no credible reason to doubt it (there's enough data showing things have gone awry), but as said, regardless, it makes sense to stop destroying the planet and being wasteful. Twats like Trump and Bolsonaro don't help matters
smiley6.gif

Going to be a heck of a challenge to remove dependency on gas though. You can't just flick a switch and run everyone's boilers and cooker hobs off hydrogen.

Similarly, we're going to have to find a better material for batteries too. Do you really want to rake-up the ocean floors to find enough lithium?

Big challenges ahead anyway.

I like to be incredibly positive about the future, the alternative is worrying yourself to death about the negative aspects

Yes population is a huge part of the problem as well as behaviours

Wars or pandemics - they might all help reduce the numbers in this overpopulated world. Not nice to think about it if its you or your family but when your time is up - your time is up

There's some incredibly interesting times ahead in how people can change their behaviour as individuals and as nations or dare I say it, collectively as the human race

There's some intersting times ahead in technological development - stuff of science fiction that hasn't even been considered yet

We think the 1960's were a time of tremendous change when anything seemed possible. I don't think we've seen anything yet. The next 50 - 100 years are sink or swim, but equally very exciting

Its very interesting thinking about all aspects of your life and thinking can I do it different or better to reduce my impact within the current limits of technology

Good thread, gets everyone thinking

Also gets people very emotive. Not always a bad thing.

Everybody can point to websites or 'scientific' reports that either support of debunk, but these are invariably created by people with a vested interest either way.

For the whole 'man made' global warming industry to carry more credibility there needs to be a lot more carrots and a lot less sticks.

I've clearly got my own views on 'man made' global warming but don't feel like an argument today (had one at the weekend) so I'll just get the popcorn out and enjoy.

Folk wont give up short flights for a "must" cheap holiday, or give up "needing" the new phone that requires rare earth metals, or give up the big oversized suv/ 4x4 / fuel guzzlers. Nations/ cultures that feel it's ok to have families that they cant feed, nations that throw crap and waste directly into the water supplies or oceans. Folk wanting quick wealth by investing in oil / gas. Folk " needing" new clothes/ fashion cos it's in now and needing for a party.
As long as humans are pretentious and self obsessed then we are all fu&$ed .

poor folk live simple lives

rich folk are destroying the planet

poor folk need to kill the rich
before they kill all the good poor simple folk
then all simple folk can share a clean world together

I have no doubt humans are having an impact on the environment although perhaps not as much as has been claimed, the problem is any counter measures are always politically/money motivated.

The point about older cars is very valid, for people who do low miles, keeping an older car longer is probably the most environmentally friendly option.

Our recycling yard used to let people help themselves to anything they wanted, recently they moved to recycling everything, whether it was still useful or not (so no more saving CRT's) they boast about increased recycling rates and pat themselves on the back.

I have a couple of very "environmentally aware" bosses who purchased electric cars, yet are very against home working, fly long haul, regularly upgrade tech before its needed etc.

I'm convinced in this social media, look at me world being seen to be doing the right thing is far more important for people than any meaningful change. Just look at the piles of rubbish left behind by the XR protesters in London last year.

Being wasteful, polluting the environment, Volcanoes erupting, carpet bombing countries, cows farting, forest fires etc ect.....these certainly don't help but they are not the main factor. We can all try to do our bit, but, solar activity is the main factor for all life and for the varying temperatures on Earth. Periods of Ice Ages and Super Greenhouse Ages is normal, these fluctuating temperatures are nothing new.

Imagine if we had a system in place that cleverly stored water somewhere to release when needed and when it did get too hot the water evaporated and cooled the earth down by using up that stored energy in a clever and amazing way which also purified the water ready to be recycled.

If only scientists could think of a way to do that then we'd all be saved. But before then I guess taxing the population via various methods is the only way out of this mess. Thank God for the Bham CAZ diverting traffic all around the center of Bham extending journeys for people who don't want to pay the £8 quid per day, in future years we will all think what would we have done without that!

For me it's not a case of not believing, more like you say Kev, it's hyped up and it's more why they keep saying about it yet don't do any where near enough about it

They should have started 40 years back, I just can't see how they can turn things around now, they leave it and leave it till it's just to big a mess

BBC 4 Programme on Landfill was really interesting, they dug up sites that Victorians used, it was just Glass and Pottery mostly, like they used to take own Jar, pot to shops and have it filled with Marmalade etc instead of all this buy it bin it society.

Then you have stuff from the 70/80's and it's everything all mixed up, they were looking at sites near coast etc, they were buried but sea has eaten away at the land so its now visible, there's nappies, batteries, glass, metal, they tested batteries, high levels of harmful materials that will soon end up in the sea

Site in West Midlands, Kids clothes from 80's thats not even rotted away, still in one, News papers still readable and these sites are all over the country with all this buried, disgusting to see

Clothes is just stupid, people constantly going to Primark to buy new crap and then bin it a few months when it fell apart, Never bothered about latest fashion, I understand some like it but you can wear stuff for longer and pass it on to others, too many buy new when you can get stuff 2nd hand

It's all got out of hand now and is still getting worse. I hardly buy anything new

My HRV was annoying me with cost of tax and wanted to improve fuel economy, took smaller 1.5 engine from Civic as it's lean burn model and fitted in this, pretty much same engine with lower emissions though as it would fall in much lower tax band if it had been 2001, also improved MPG by nearly 10, getting mid late 40's instead of 37, it does all what I need, can fit quite a few machines in it so why get rid and I can do repairs myself as it's nice and basic but has all I need

They are never going to sort this out, gone too far already

I've got a Mk1 1984 Golf GTI Convertible in storage and in 3 years time it will be exempt from the CAZ charge. I'll hopefully be getting that back on the road and I'll be using that in the warmer months and my work van the rest of the year.

My current car is a 6n2 1.4 diesel Polo, I can understand that being one of the cars they want to target but it's emissions are pretty low and at the time it was made it was sold as 'clean' car. The following years 6n2 has road tax of £10 but mine cost around £165 last year.

I stopped trying to understand this wacky system. Heaven knows what people are chucking away these days, the 80's was the worst for dumping crap into landfill. It was the age of loadsamoney mentality, a time where most people didn't give a sh*t about anything apart from themselves.

yeh i think the bad thing will be the ice melting in the north.
and the sea rising.

i been reading about dogger land a place people go to watch people in bushes

no it was a land that connected uk to europe 25000 years ago (120m the sea has risen in 25000 years fact) it’s now underwater
along with 45 percent of all the worlds land mass from 65000 years ago.

problem is we are speeding up the warming with fossil fuel.

on top of that it’s the plastic in the water
carbon atom on the h20 making H2oC super rain drops

doesn’t the water now form a chain around a single carbon atom in our atmosphere?
making larger drops
forming dirty clouds that hang for longer drop like lots of rain in short periods….

made by cars it’s just old fashioned fossil fuel burning…
it is nasty..

and it’s been going on for to long..
but there is no quick fix
really think the rich people in notting hill who’s basements are flooding can
soak it up with fois grois
love to stuff something down there throats!
oil co. been driving this train baby and we are all on board.

me included no way out little baby’s breathing in dirt air reality
little children dying in london reality
it’s just a bad time to be a human

countries borrow money to prop up there system of greed we are all on the tred mill
because we want a house and the lates console nice car.
so we get on board the tred mill and do the dirt work
for them!

they can borrow pretend money from the future
but they are taking the planets future which is real

i will add hgv swerving all over the m40 the other day nearly wiped my family of the earth
-shortage of hgv drivers in uk -
gov solution - extend there legal operating road hours from 9-15 hours

that’s yours & mines safety on the road disregarded. just a snippet at what gov thinks is a fix

we need tocamac atoms fusion hydrogen plasma lcd crt energy sooner than ever Retroman8392021-08-25 21:36:25

great link from cools

i’m currently helping to protect the wolf in spain
today i picked litter in a forest a small thing
but it stopped them bits of plastic going into that stream a knats piss in the ocean
but we gotta try a little bit all of us and went wild swimming
been 2600m up in the clouds top of a mountain yesterday

we live in a great planet but it’s hurtin
watching wild wolf cubs on the mountain made me think it’s the wolfs that give the mountain a reason to be.
and in return the mountain gives the wolf a home.

we have been given possibly the most amazing home in the known universe and beyond
we need to do better unf**k the world

Ah so when they get to 40 year old they tax and mot exempt and also free in clean air zones?

Got another 4 years on my 85 CRX, it might even be on the road by then

Don't think it's applicable to the London congestion charge mate.

Cars over 40 years old are considered historic and are exempt from the Bham CAZ.

So no tax, no MOT and no CAZ.
