Update.
I never did get the sound working properly on my Windows Mame machines as they were.
So I did two things.
1) Bought different GPUS (Radeon 6450, pasively cooled, for about a tenner each). The ones I was using before were far more recent.
2) Reinstalled everything from the ground up - Windows, latest drivers, the latest version of Groovymame and ROMSET
And now... the sound on Kungfu Master and others is perfect! I still haven't got past that bl**dy hunchback on level 4 yet, but I'm enjoying trying.
Conclusions?
Either the software didn't like my patricular GPUs, or there was a problem with the (audio) drivers, or both.
Frustratingly, however, having resolved this issue, there now seems to be another one. On certain games, inckuding Track'n'Field and Hypersports, there is now an intermittent audio pop, when there wasn't one before. I've done a (tiny) bit of research) online, and it seems that the problem isn't uncommon, but most folks reporting it seem to be using Pi setups with different frontends - not GroovyMame/Attract mode on windows PC.
It doesn't totally kill the game-playing experience - like the old sound issue, but it's still a bit annoying. So far none of the suggested fixes I've seen have worked.
Just wondering if anyone else has been having this prob, and maybe knew how to fix it?
Cheers
