Not really a "new" user as I lurked around since the early days of the list, been on J+ for a long time and someone persuaded me to come back to the 'VAC!

And XY Man STILL owes me a Tempest. Must be... oh, 14 years now? Bastard!

Hi Shaun! Can't honestly say you're likely to ever see that. Though you're far more likely than any of us. At least you're in the right country now

Hey Martin... long time! :)

Yeah I wrote that one off as a very bad deal. I supported that guy in several "disagreements" but never again. Bloody thief. Then again - I'll be scouring California Extreme for him, he's not exactly hard to spot!!!

Anyway all is good - I got a ZVG so at least I have a new project :)

Hiya bud and welcome over to the dark side :)

Good to see you here and with Chad being active on the site it's the best place to be for ZVG-related goodness. Might even get some early beta access

Hi Shaun

Good to see you made it here finally, karma is a great thing, and maybe thats why you picked up that lovely Tempest cocktail for buttons!

Regards

Now all I need is a vector monitor / cab to put it all in! I may try it with a scope initially - anyone tried that? And whats the general consensus - linux build or DOS?

Hi Shaun, yep it work fine on a scope. For now I'd say go with the DOS build if your hardware supports it. The Linux version is very promising but still being developed and there isn't a menu to go with it yet so it's not really possible to put it in a cab unless you're only going to run one game.

Cheers,

Dan

So I picked up a P4 today, opened it up and - no ISA slot. Does anyone know of a PCI Soundblaster card that is compatible with DOS Mame and will have pure DOS (rather than legacy) drivers?

Ahhhh welcome to the dark side of owning a ZVG. Finding a PCI sound card to work with DOS is extremly difficult. The only one I've ever got to work is a Soundblaster Live Value card, and that was after a lot of trial and error and general pulling out of hair, and this was still with a P3 motherboard. This is why the Linux build is so vital. The last hardware to support ISA on the motherboard was about the P3 1Ghz mark, which is still probably too slow to run all the games. I need to find some time to see if I can get a newer P4 2.8Ghz running with DOS and the SB Live card. Up till now I've been using old P3 systems at around the 800mhz range which is enough to run most games fine (not Star Wars, ESB, and some slowdown on Major Havoc).

So maybe linux is the best solution then? I seem to get mixed messages about the best / ideal setup.

Is the config of ZVG straightforward under linux?

Sorry for the necro-posting, only spotted this thread...

There are quite a few PCI sound cards that work OK under DOS, I found a SB variant with an onboard amp and output it to the AR board in my Asteroids Deluxe. I'll dig out the model no. later if you still need it, there were a good few on Ebay when I got it and it only cost me £1 or so.

The linux port works but needs a ZVG code rewrite really. I got the menu working without too many changes after squashing some bugs in the ZVG SDK, but you can't hit the hardware as in DOS so it needs SDL or SVGALib or similar to handle input etc. I was waiting on Steve settling on a flavour for the rewritten Linux version and was going to use the same. I may crack on anyway... had the thought of trapping the ZVG vector calls and writing them to screen as well/instead which would make development a whole lot easier...

There's a slightly updated DOS menu with a few more manufacturer logos in which isn't released - I may slip a link on here later for those who want a beta look.

You should be OK to use it in a Tempest cab (hopefully) as the menu supports rotation and spinners, though I don't know anyone that's tried yet.

Cheers,

Chad
