Hello all. I thought I would quickly introduce myself as I've just joined. My name is Martin and I've just entered the brave world of Arcade Machine ownership. Before this point, I've been collecting console videogames for around 6 years and have amassed around 1200, ranging from Atari to Vectrex. However, the holy grail has always been my own arcade cabinet.

i'd got close one or two times before, but personal reasons meant it never happened. So, in the vein of Bart and Lisa, I continued to ask the question: "Can I have an Arcade Machine? Can I have an Arcade Machine? Can I have an Arcade Machine?" at the wife and, finally, she agreed (or threatened to leave me, I forget the fine details of the chat). So i've been looking ever since, waiting for the right one. I didn't want any old machine, or a mame cab. It had to be one that made the memories flood back.

There are a number of games that I have fond memories of, mainly Bank Panic, Out Run, Op Thunderbolt, Gorf and Battlezone. But, while trawling eBay I spotted a cabinet that happened to be my first experience of Videogaming. It was 1978 and we were at Pontins in Selsey (I think). In the Restaurant on the first day, we were having breakfast and I saw "Boot Hill" sitting in the corner. Like a moth to a candle, I made my excuses (or was it a tantrum?) and spent the rest of the morning watching people play it.

Then last week one came up on ebay that was in okayish cosmetic condition, but wasn't working. So I've bought it. My view is, even if it doesn't work, it's still a hell of a conversation piece

I am pretty confident I can deal with the cosmetic aspects of it without too much hassle, but will be totally out of my depth at the "getting it to work" bit (assuming it is actually repairable). Once it arrives (hopefully this week), I'll post some pics if you guys are interested (or you can see some if you search for it under Completed listings on ebay). Any specific advice on this would be much appreciated. According to my dad, job 1 will be to get a Fire Extinguisher. Personally, I think he's still miffed about me missing the rest of breakfast in '78.....

Anyway, enough rambling for now! Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Martin

Job 1 never hurts, but you shouldn't need it until the wife decides to burn the cab

Get some pics up when it's here. Boot Hill might be a bit of a challenge though as it's not one that many of us will have seen too much of, but there's certainly a few people that know all about them. And welcome

Hi All - thanks for the warm welcome. I'm really looking forward to getting to know you all.

The purchase was definitely a "heart wins over head" moment I think! Being a total newbie, I should have gone for a working cabinet or something more modern/common to start with. However, this is one of the earliest cabs and something that I hold fond memories for (I know, getting sentimental in my old age). I spoke to the seller before I bid and he said it powered up and the monitor came to life, but that was about it. So, keeping a positive vibe, it's not totally knackered

Hoping he will call me tomorrow to confirm delivery so, as soon as it's here, i'll post a stack load of pics and you can help me work out where on earth I should start

imaji - I'm in Basingstoke, so not too far away from you at all (and I'm a life-long Saints fan too)
chubsta - see how it goes, I might have a restoration project for sale soon

Wondered who got this in the end, hope you get what you are expecting, was considering it but the seller ID put me off. Be good to see some internal pics, asked but never received.

Andy.

Hi Andy - I'll def. post some detailed internal pics when it arrives. I've seen a chap in the states on Youtube showing off a mint one so I've got a good idea of what it should look like when I open her up

i called the seller last week to discuss it and he was pretty clear that, cosmetically, it was pretty good (it had been stored for 20 years along with a load of others they'd acquired) but there was a definite fault with the board.

He had a mint looking (inactive) Gorf cab too, so wondering if the new owner of that will find his way here too?

Hello Martin, i think you will defently have a good time around, and find the games you really like. Arcade games are the far the best ones in the history. They keept tradition during time, and after many years, people still play them, by desk, by phone..
