Hi all, I have just registered and am here to say Hello. a 45 years young old Arcade lover from the mid eighties onwards. I have a Sega Outrun machine I bought way back in 1998 from a supplier in Leeds but has not been used for sometime. He was very confused someone would want to buy a cabinet for home use.

Looking forward to reading posts and finding out as much info as I can on restoring and maybe sourcing other systems. Yes, unfortunately its been 15yrs since I turned on the system and nothing lights up except the marquee.

My journey begins...

Any suggestions on threads or area to read regarding basic troubleshooting a cabinet. so far only the Marquee lights up and the neck of the monitor glows. It did all work, but that was sometime ago. Is there any good methods to test the monitor independently or the video-out from the PCB.

Welcome to the forum, amazing you've got a machine you bought back in 1998! How did you get the opportunity to buy the machine? Was it advertised somewhere, or did you ask an operator etc.
It's great you still have it, how come you haven't touched it for so long? Was it lack of interest?
Would love to see photos of OutRun if you have them? I'm sure the issues will be soon sorted with the help of the forum!
What sort of games are you into? What games were your favourites growing up?

Hi, thank you.
I had always wanted an arcade cab, I was working before starting uni and just phoned an amusements company via the yellow pages, yes very early internet days. He agreed to sell me one as it was around the time arcades were dying out and consoles were king so they were not leasing them out as much. It was fortunate that there was a company which made and serviced fairground rides near where I live, so the amusements happily brought it over to my parents house at no extra cost as they had a driver who regularly came my way.
I enjoyed playing it but over the years adult life has gotten in the way. After uni and starting work, I lived in various rental flats and It has always been stored in my parents garage, and I have had nowhere to move it to. 10 years ago my children were born and they certainly take up most of your free time.

I will post some images if you wish, but it's not in a pretty state. that said it wants great when I got it, usual cigarette burns on the bezel, cracked plastic around steering wheel and gear shifter. etc.

Growing up I had a Sinclair spectrum 48K and then Saved for an Amiga, so loved the 16 Bit days. As for Arcade it was always the racing games for me. Outrun, Super Sprint, Pole Position, Roadblasters and Chase HQ. Also games like space harrier, chase HQ, gauntlet and Pang spring to mind.

What about yourself, do you have any systems or favourite games.

I wish my parents let me store a cab or two in their garage. I remember seeing some for sale I really wishing I could get them.
I grew up similar, I had the Spectrum +2 > Sega Master System > Amiga and so on. The 16 bit days definitely are where it was at for me too, although I did enjoy 8 bit too.
In the arcade there were so many great memories and go to games.

At the local leisure centre we had Caveman Ninja, the nearest town we played WWF Wrestlefest to death. At the local theme park (The American Adventure) the go to titles were Superman, Ghosts N Goblins, Ghouls n Ghosts, Double Dragon 2, Afterburner, Shadow Warriors, Who Shot Johnny Rock and Space Pirates. On holidays, it was always Golden Axe, Mad Dog McCree (Remember going in every arcade to find these), then later Ridge Racer, The Simpsons, Aliens vs Predator. And of course Street Fighter II, which were made even better when seeing it being played on a giant Megalo cabinet.
But to answer your questions, I have all the systems I had as a kid and favourite games are the one's above :)

Welcome Chris

Certainly a good choice of machine to have, it's one of my fav games ever, like the driving games too along with Gun one like Op Wolf which was my first cab I bought in 2001, then I got Chase HQ sitdown while waiting for an Outrun dlx to come up at right price

My dad won't let me store anything in his Garage either, non of me cabs or cars

1st time I saw and played outrun upright was local Fun Fair must of been Summer 1987, can remember it like it was last week

Welcome… close to me in mid Cheshire too… you are clearly seeking guidance and advice on getting the none working issues resolved. Firstly there are some good technical repair and restoration topic threads on here you just need a bit of time to seek them out?

Luckily there are quite a few tech advising members happy to help with suggestions and who by chance also love that game, though all cabs are similar in design

My advice if you are confident with electrical equipment then there’s a self cure that costs less than asking a professional engineer. ( I am a retired one)

I would say time in cold storage, maybe slight damp has affected the aging parts within the cab. If you know some basic electronics arm yourself with a hairdryer and a multimeter (not needing an expensive one) and just visually examine any perished or maybe loose wiring and exposed fuse holders which may have corroded slightly?

Obviously you have plugged it in to find the marquee lights up and you may have heard some hissing and cracklind sounds too?

Before you power it again warm it up internally to rid any residual damp where practical, especially around the monitor, where due to dangerously high voltage , they do suffer from cold and damp more? Especially too if a build up of dust is present around some components.

First repair aim is to visually look for maybe light smoking and listen for any sparking noise from within the rear of the cab at power up, This would point to an obvious area of concern and attention as a fault may be causing that symptom? If that occurs power down and examine that area as fully as possible , if it’s the monitor isolate it’s power lead and continue, the game can be powered without the monitor power connected and it’s likely the main suspect as visually you see no game.

Locate the main power supply unit and with the multimeter, check what voltages you have , relative to the psu labelling …. 5v , 12v etc and if all those are present you are part way

Look at the board and check it’s connectors are secure maybe moving the to ensure good contact,, perhaps checking for same voltages on the pcb beyond the edge connector, if they are present try to enable a credit and see if you get any game sound.

If you do it may just be the monitor has failed due to lack of use over long time and damp? Some members on here offer more detailed tech repairs on them.

Be careful handing the monitor or it’s chassis and follow advice here under the technical section if required ( it may have blown a fuse) if visible this can be checked with the power off using the multimeter again on the ohms resistance setting, if you are inexperienced?

This is just a basic guide and may be beyond your confidence that’s fine but part of ownership hobby is learning to repair and maintain yourself? Many here do so with relative success it’s a learning process.

Good luck finding out and keep us all informed perhaps. Hope this helped a bit?

Thanks, for all the comments guys and the warm welcome. I will post pics of the cab soon. it's in a sorry state. Unfortunately, on of the spade connectors broke of the start button, so if anyone knows where to source one, id much appreciate it.

A big hello from another Manchester resident Chris. And if there was one game that anyone could have, just one, then Outrun would surely be up there. The music is well, awesome. Ah, the halcyon days of buying games for a couple of hundred quid from operators and the small ads in Loot and Coinslot. Who remembers Loot? I hope you get the Outun working soon. Always check out the power supply first and get a good quality multimeter if you don't already have one. Always start from the wall and work backwards. Lots of good repair advice on here and online. Here's one channel I enjoy for general repair advice: https://www.youtube.com/@LyonsArcade

Welcome to the forum. You got your OutRun at a good time, they are now 10 times the price they were back in those days! I got my OutRun in 1999 and had a long and enjoyable journey fixing it up.

I still have mine too, plus a few others.. that's what tends to happen in this hobby! :p

For your cab, you want to check the game board is getting 5Vdc at the board. Are any LEDs lit on the board? With the cab being stored dormant for so long, the PSU may well have deteriorated to the point it either doesn't output enough oomph or too much. Needs to be around 5V at the board, if it's less than that it won't run. I would unplug the power connector from the board and see what the 5V line on the PSU is outputting first.

Thank you. Yes, i have decided to split into a number of areas to check through. I think the board and the monitor might need repair. I can see the red LED light on power but saw no output to screen. I also remember the steering wheel used to shudder when 1st turning on but nothing. So far I have tested a line out from radio to the sound amplifier and am getting sound through the cabinet speakers. Turning up the monitor to full brightness gives a very purple screen (no game connected). THe PSU is giving out 5.72V on the 5v Rail. I cant easily see if I can dial down or if 5.72V is ok ? the 12V is ok.

Do you know if the game will load/run with no controllers attached. I.e. just Power and monitor output connected. So I can rule out the other bits. ?

There are so many games id love to have. An extra cab or too would be nice. I prefer the days when you didn't need to go through hours of walkthrough before you could just start playing a game.
