Hoarding

I've been watching the numerous TV shows of recent about Hoarders. I do find myself part sympathising with the hoarders as they start to part with their stuff. I certainly seem to fit in with a lot of hoarder traits which I find a bit worrying. I don't mean I keep rubbish, but I tend not to get rid of stuff. While we have been sorting out the spare room, vast piles of my stuff surrounds us now as we sleep, 1000's of games magazines, boxes with my PCBs in, various boxes with consoles, and stuff has started to pile up on top of those. I have always said its because I am a collector and don't see the point in getting rid of stuff that I may play on/read/watch/use again one day. But what with family life and soon to be extending family I kind of think I need to face reality..... I don't think saying I am a collector quite washes anymore with my wife.

Anyone else watched these shows? Do you think you are a hoarder?....or a Collector?

I think we all start out as collectors and shift to hoarders without realising it. I too need to do a bit of "life laundry". I kidded myself that I was keeping all these old consoles and computers so my kids could use them and learn what it was like bitd. I think they might keep them interested for about 5 minutes before they are reaching for the iPad. Just need to find the horrendous amount of time and space I'd need to sort through it all...

I think the old computers for your kids argument isn't one that stands up. We have to admit we do it for ourselves.

The only part that gets passed onto our children is if they actually get into it themselves or b, they get the stuff once you've finally snuffed it. Hopefully though it will be worth a bit of dosh by then so they can get a bit of $$

Yep, As soon as I got a loft, all of a sudden it was rammed with sh*te!

My major concern is just how much weight my loft can take! I am at work today, but my wife has sent me a long email saying I need to find somewhere else to put the majority of it to get the house clear.

I can see me getting quite ruthless with it all to be honest. The mags though are the history of video games from the early 80s though to around 2004, I just don't think I can part with them!!

That's very good advice Tim, I might print that out and stick it on our fridge as a reminder. I guess I could get some of those DVDs with the magazine scans on. Just annoying as it took over 5 years to collect all the CVGs

I upset the GF when I said she was like that

Classic example, she got a new steering wheel cover, had to tell her to throw the old one in the bin, as she was thinking of keeping it, I could see the cogs turning while she was thinking about it
