Hook Pin Startup issue

I've got my first pinball machine a Data East Hook. I know there are a number of issues and was looking to put it in test mode to run through each and see what's not working.

Seems that even that is an issue.

On switch-on the machine starts up, shouts out Hook, Hook, Hook, lights flash and a few of the solenoids fire. The display then says "DISPLAY: HOOK A4.01", but doesn't show anything else.

Pressing the test button does nothing and the reverse button only allow activation of the flippers, on restart, i.e. reverse button up, flippers don't work, button down they do.

Any ideas how to get past the display and fire up the test would be much appreciated.

Quite a fun pinball, I have one if you have any questions or want anything checked. (mine needs the fliptronic board checking and the right flipper coil replacing at the moment)

Check the NVRAM, I had loads of problems on my Rocky & Bullwinkle (another data east) and it turned out that the NVRAM was dodgy. for testing I just put a 6116 in there instead.

Once you get it sorted check out the updated rom for it here

Those updated roms look really cool, but sadly i don't own any of the pins.

Sounds like it isn’t booting . Check voltages on the power board . CPU needs steady 5v or very close.

Seems that it now doesn't even get that far. Still shouts out the Hook, Hook, Hook and dies, no display :(

Will need to check all the boards, but the power board will be the first for nice clean voltages and then the main board.

All fuses are intact so at least that's good news. Went through the playfield to ensure there weren't any stuck solenoids before switching on.

if you start the game you need to check that none of the solenoids is constantly on. That causes damages on the Transistors on the PPB Board. So if you test keep a hand on the ON/OFF Switch.

For the testing you can unplug PPB Board. What shoes the PIA and Blanking LED on the CPU?
