For some reason I left the laptop (win 7) on and it seems to have automatically downloaded windows 10 and is now saying when I shut down it will automatically install. I did not sign up for it and I don't want the blasted thing, my laptop must be 15 years and I reckon it will probably kill my computer if it installs, heaven knows what it might do to everything currently on my machine.

Anyone know how to stop this process?

I *believe* that if it's downloaded and ready to install, GWX control panel can handle it. http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/

<edit> ahh beat me to it.

Also I understand win10 is supposed to be better on older hardware than even win 7, but my experience with it was ******* TERRIBLE so I would not really be able to comment!

10s awesome, it won't have installed itself unless it has validated your laptops settings and knows it will run fine.

I do like Windows 10. Been using it a while now, but I had a wacky thing happen about a month ago, where the mouse and keyboard completely stopped, and wouldn't be detected. Couldn't get them working even using different ports

Did a bit a googling and it is a common issue. The solution was very odd - power off the PC as it is booting! It must force a re-detection doing that. That's the only issue I've had with it

My laptop was validated as fine so i went for it and it spent hours trying to install then I got an error message that said "something happened" followed by BSOD's on boot so I reverted back.

Have to disagree there, bought a new laptop with 10 on it, bleak, crazy errors everywhere and insanely, insanely sluggish. Massively more sluggish out of the box than my 7 yr old Vista laptop (yes!). Has the most pathetic error messages ever - "something went wrong" - cheers mate for that insightful information!!

The Windows "store" account you use rediculously takes over as the account you log on with. (Yeah possibly you can undo that, but I couldn't easily work out how and that was the last straw)

It's on its way back to Amazon now utterly as not fit for purpose and I'm now a confirmed w10 refusenik.

Some people may like it (evidentially) but there's the risk you'll hate it.

In the end, it brought a re-schedule for later thing, so I keep setting it for 5 days time, hopefully I'll just get a new computer at some point and can keep putting it off until then.

There is a win10 update you can uninstall in windows update. I did it myself yesterday.

Once taken off it will remove the annoying reminders to upgrade to win 10 and the update will remain in the list of "importamt" updates.

You have a month to try it out, you can put it back to the original OS via the control panel

Windows 10 pile of shat! wish it would fork off telling me to upgrade!! Saying that from the 29th of July you will have to pay for the upgrade, if you can call it that
smiley36.gif
So eventually you will have to pay for it when Win7 is no longer supported! I will clone my existing Drive then do the update and stick the Drive in a Draw till the Day it's needed, well that's if I have the same PC as the OS is tied to the Hardware

Turned the Mrs' PC into a useless pile of slowness did Win 10, wasn't asked for, was avoided as much as possible but auto installed one night. Loads of stuff didn't work after like network and printers.

We'll not get in to the whole MS v whomever argument but MS shouldn't be forcing this on people regardless - you shouldn't need a 3rd party tool to stop an upgrade - free or not people have a choice.
