Was just thinking when i first saw Star Wars, it was when it was on TV, can remember sitting there at the end with the music playing and they all stood there, only part i have in my mind as very long time ago but do remember the ending

I was thinking at least 3-4 years but just had a look and says it wasnt on USA TV till 1983 and someone else said 7 years so that would of been 1984 over here so probably in the arcade before a few of us saw the movie

Yep, I never got to see it in the cinema in the late 70's.
I remember friends being round and just wanting to play and make noise the weekend it was shown on TV in 1984. I was there wanting them to f off so I could enjoy this amazing thing that I knew about from everywhere but had never actually seen.

You remember it being 1984 then? Edit: found some info, it was on 1984 but also 1982.

Was gonna say, that means it would of been after all 3 were in Cinema so must be 5 years then

I was thinking max 5 years for movies to hit TV, did see some at cinema but most stuff not until it was on TV

was watching Dickenson's Real Deal last week in morning while having breakfast, how bad is that programme now, Just happened to have guy on with Star Wars Cinema Poster, I pointed out to other half it's not original 1977 which is why it was quite cheap, had Award stuff on it which tells you it's later one from Re-Release at Cinema

Amazing really, film like that from 1977 and we don't see it till 1982, like you say now it's months not

Remember having to get mum to twist my dads arm to let us watch Jaws on TV, he's saying your not old enough, people fainted at the cinema, he shouldn't have read the rubbish in papers. Temple of Doom I remember them showing the Making on TV when it was released, but watched on TV first time, BMX Bandits and Goonies also and talking of Goonies, they had Martha Plimpton on GMB yesterday

Interesting info here anyway and Radio Times cover

Pretty sure it was coming on 5 years before something got to TV. I know it was defo 6 months between Rental and Retail of VHS tapes. Usually it was about 6 months after a cinema release it hit Rental.

I think it also depended on the film itself, legal issues with soundtracks etc could cause delay on any of those fronts. I remember Disney would re-release their films every 7 years, probably to catch a new generation, most of those would be on a limited release 6months, then back in the vault. I think in these modern times of constant availability online and the ease of piracy, they are just now permanently available.

As an aside. Everyone remember when films like crocodile dundee came out. And the video store had an entire rack just for one film.and a lot of the time they were all out!

Its total rose tinted compared to todays immediate rinsing of box sets on demand etc but there was something special about going to the video store and picking out a few films and snacks etc

We still have a video store near us, been running for 40 years now although they are on dvd and blu ray but they have EVERYTHING there is possible on dvd/bluray.

Also over in Liverpool a VHS video rental store opened last year and apparently they are doing well, they also have arcade machines and host games nights using none other than good old CRT television sets.

You won't find any LCDs in the arcade machines either, from what i have seen they are all original.

Thats pretty cool! Bit of a bold move opening a vhs rental store in todays world. I can just imagine the bank managers face when asking for the loan...

Still lot of strange prople out there collecting VHS tapes and Audio cassettes.

Corrected that for you lol seriously though there are still films not on dvd like RAD bmx movie and people pay crazy prices for some old horror films, that garbage you wouldnt even watch

There was something cool about looking at all the covers in video rental, 1st time my dad hired the player and a few movies before we talked him into buying one as he said it would never be used, when he bought one he used it every day pretty much till he moved onto hard drive recorders

We still have VHS although its a modern Toshiba with DVD & USB playability too, it is only used once in a blue moon if we find a VHS movie thats not on DVD, we will watch it and throw the film away.

Trouble is even with DVD they take a load of space up, i recently went through our collection and gave around 14 binbags of DVDs and blu rays to charity, collected from our visits to Blockbuster over the years, we used to go at least twice a week and buy ex rentals.

Do miss those days.

I have a VHS/DVD combo, its now in the loft, I mainly used it to convert all my TV recorded DVDs of series that had not been released. I still pick up the odd VHS tape at boot fairs if its something not available elsewhere, last one I bought was Carter USM - In bed with Carter (Live at Brixton.

I still have boxes of VHS tapes in the garage. I haven't replaced all of my collection to DVD/Blu ray and so have kept them for now.

I have all the X-Files box sets still sealed from Woolworths not watched as I now have them on blu ray and didn't get round to watching them.

My DS9 and Voyager complete collections I gave to my brother in law last year. They do take up a lot of room

Word of warning on those that are on DVD. One of the later seasons, I think it's 7 or 8... has 2 corrupt discs. I contacted Fox about it (like you I bought the lot to 'watch later' so it was after the time I could take them back to the store) and they did sweet fa..

.... so I watched the rest of the show on downloads.

Interestingly we have been watching the bad girls prison series and you notice at around season 5 the transition from 4:3 to 16:9 was introduced, it was around this time that widescreen was becoming more affordable.

I hated widescreen with a passion and it took me ages to get used to it, use both these days, does'nt bother me anymore but i do like to watch fimls in their intended ratio.

I had faulty disc on Season 1 of Miami Vice, only bought that to start, was faulty by the 3rd episode or something, don't happen often but like you say, how many people watch them all if it's complete box set in less than a couple of years or more

Still not watched any Knight Rider, only a few A-Team, watched a couple of seasons of Dukes of Hazzard, Bought box set of Miami Vice and watched them all twice now, great that is, apart from the 2 episodes when they tried to bring it back, got to remember not too watch them next time as it ruins the end of it where it should finish, Imagine if you had all that on VHS

I've still got old Panasonic VHS I've had since 1980's 2 are in original box, most are Hi-Fi Stereo and a later model that plays any vhs tape, World player one. have a few ex rental tapes I've picked up of 80's films not seen on dvd, nice to have a few at least anyway

Other half has all the Star Trek on DVD that I've bought her, she had one lot on VHS too, so much room that lot took up

Last time I was in Lowestoft, it's a good few years but under 10, there was a shop, all they have sold were VHS, he had 1000's, quite good looking through them, covers were cool on some like The Wraith

Gotta say I didn't care for widescreen at first, didn't help when half the TV programmes weren't in the format, now when you go back to 4:3 it just looks wrong, Arcade cabs look fine. Get used to films in Panavision so even 16:9 looks bad then, it's like its in 4:3

We don't watch tv these days but looking back it was fantastic, The snowman every Christmas, band aid, the A team, dallas, prisoner cell block h, knight rider, airwolf, columbo, kojak, the waltons, top of the pops, cartoons like daffy duck, tom & jerry ect.

Thats when tv was good, its just full of garbage these days, the only one who watches tv in our house is the dog
