So, if you've read my previous thread(s) on extending the number of tunes in Out Run you'll be aware that me and Porchy have now successfully achieved this.

Porchy has very kindly designed a PCB which will slot directly into the Z80 code eprom socket on the Out Run board set. The PCB will incorporate a PLCC32 socket and map the pins of a 28-pin 27512 eprom to the equivalent pins of a PLCC32 memory (39SF010A or equivalent).

The PCB will look something like this :-

pcb.png

It will be available as a either a bare PCB or as a full kit containing the assembled adapter module and the pre-programmed GAL.

If you choose to buy the bare PCB you'll need the following :-

1 x PLCC32 socket

1 x 1Mbit PLCC32 flash memory

1 x GAL16V8 for new Z80 address decoding

2 x 14-way pin headers

1 flying wire to link the A16 point on the PCB to pin 18 of the GAL

You'll also need some way to program the PLCC32 memory (a DIP32 to PLCC32 adapter can be bought on eBay for a couple of quid).

If you choose to buy the fully assembled module then you'll just need to replace the Z80 code eprom and the custom address decoder device @ IC108 then solder a flying wire from pin 18 of the GAL to the A16 point of the adapter PCB.

Prices haven't been set in stone yet but are expected to be around the £5 mark for the bare PCB and around the £20 mark for the fully assembled module.

The legality of distributing the new tunes and the fixed PCM sample rom obviously raises issues. I'm open to suggestions as to how you guys think the best way to get these new tunes out into the open is, without raising too much awareness from Sega's men in black.

Is anybody interested in adding two new tunes to Out Run? If so then please register your interest in this thread.

EDIT : I forget to mention, you'll also need 4 x 27512 roms for the patched 68000 code. These roms are NOT included in the price of the kit as I figured that most people will have at least 4 spare 27512 roms laying around somewhere. The patches done to the 68000 code and the Z80 will be freely available. The 68000 patches are in the same format as the current OR Enhanced patches and you can choose whether you want the extra music tracks patched on top of all the current OR Enhanced patches or whether you just want the new music tracks but none of the other OR Enhanced patches. The Z80 code patches will come as a bsdiff patch file.

Interest declared so far :-

Sarj, do you want the bare PCB or the full kit?

Update on this :-

The PCB's arrived with Porchy a few days ago and he assembled one and sent it to me for testing. It worked perfectly first time.

A few pics :-

All I needed to do was add a single pin header for the connecting wire between A16 and pin 18 of the PAL

The finished article in place

So I now have 5 tunes to choose from in Out Run

Many thanks to Porchy for helping me make a crazy dream come true!

If you want either the fully assembled board or the bare PCB then please send a PM to Porchy. The prices are £20 for the fully assembled board or £5 for the bare PCB. Those prices include postage.

you guys amaze me

So that will let you add more tunes, but what tunes can you put on there, gotta be something the original hardware will play

So you could load stuff from other sega games

Wish I knew more about music and could compose some new classic tunes in the style of originals

I really like the versions on Sega DreamWorks for the Dreamcast, but can't see that being able to run, it's like an updated version of the originals but done very nicely I thought

Would be interested in one also

See this thread for more details :-

I basically extracted the two new tunes from the Nintendo 3DS version of Out Run that was released a couple of weeks ago and made them work on the arcade board, with help from Porchy on the hardware side of things.

You won't be able to add random tunes from other Sega games with this hardware mod, it's purely for adding the two tunes from 3D Out Run.

The PLCC32 comes installed and pre-programmed with the 2 new tunes. Either me or porchy can do the 68000 code roms for you guys but you've got some options first as to how you want your roms. All the code patches that have been done to the 68000 and Z80 code will be made freely available as soon as I've written up a README for this. The only thing I can't make freely available are the new tunes themselves, for obvious reasons. Even supplying the PLCC32 with the new tunes installed is a very grey area and I don't want either me, porchy or UKVAC to get any heat for this. Out Run is still a money making venture for Sega at the end of the day and I don't have the time or energy to be fighting the might of that corporation in a court of law for doing this.

The options you have are :-

1) code for just the new tunes but no other features of the current version of OR Enhanced

2) code for the new tunes + all other features of the current version of OR Enhanced

3) code for the new tunes + some of the features of the current version of OR Enhanced

I don't currently have any spare 27512 EPROMs/EEPROMs, I'm not sure whether porchy does or not. If he doesn't then one of us will need to order some in or you'll need to send your current 68000 main cpu roms to one of us for reprogramming.

You'll also need the fixed PCM sample rom (IC71) for the corrected percussion samples, as the new tunes sound totally carp with the borked rom. This is a 27256.

You also need to be confident enough with a soldering iron to be able to move the jumper/zero ohm resistor from position R2 to position R1 to enable support for a 27512 rom for the Z80 code (extra address line is brought into play by moving this jumper).

I wil not, repeat NOT, be responsible for you killing your OR board set if you aren't confident of doing this. OR boards aren't the easiest to work on (just ask retroclinic!) so please exercise extreme care when moving the jumper/zero ohm resistor.

I currently have the enhanced set with the fixed pcm sample rom, though I'm not sure if it was done correctly, as it sounds no different from the stock rom. I assume I could just get those reprogrammed?

You could indeed my friend. It's not as easy to tell the borked PCM rom from the fixed rom with just the 3 original tunes, but if you put the borked rom back and try Camino A Mi Amor then you'd hear the difference.

Here's the first few bars of Camino using the borked PCM sample rom :-

And here's the first few bars of the same tune with the fixed PCM sample rom :-

Surely you can hear that the ride cymbal is trying to overpower the FM music when using the borked rom?
