Having had a close shave with online fraud last week, I realize I've been a bit lax with security on my devices. I've installed AVG (recommended?) on my android devices and want something decent to install on my Windows PCs. Requirements:

- Non-intrusive (no useless popups every 3 seconds, thanks).

- Won't hugely slow down performance.

- Free is good, but happy to pay a fair fee for something good and solid. If paid for, I want to be able to install it on multiple PCs without hiking up the cost.

What do you guys use and can recommend?

Thanks.

I heard the windows defender that comes with win10 is good enough?

That's what I heard too, so haven't bothered with anything else. After getting fraudulent use of my debit card details online, I figured it's probably not good enough. Don't know for sure how it happened, but I haven't used the physical card in a few weeks, so probably ripped off online, somehow.

It might have something to do with people not wanting to publish on a public website which suites they are using to protect their home networks - just in case.

Hmm, didn't think of that.

Its highly unlikely anyone has swiped your card details directly from your machine. More likely a business got done over.

I know of no technical types that use AV above and beyond what Microsoft supply with Win10/11 in their private machines. On business networks it's different, but there you have legal obligations that AV helps to fill.

Keep anything networked up to date with patches, best thing you can do.

How would a business have my card details? I think the fraud has just made me more paranoid about online security.

Any website that offers to ‘remember your card details for next time’ would have them.
And they should be behind walls of protection and encrypted to the eyebrows but reports over the years have revealed that is not always the case.
