Hi all,

Currently building a Groovy MAME rig for my cab. I’m looking to get a J-PAC device but confused how does PC connect to J-PAC device controller wise? (I know for video it’s connected by VGA cable to a modified GPU).

Is the PC connection made by using Mini-B to USB-A cable?

Sorry I’m advance if this silly question and I’m overlooking the obvious.

Thanks

JPAC reads control inputs from it's edge connector and relays them back to PC via USB, converted to key strokes. The PC just thinks it's connected to a keyboard, basically.

Cheers, I thought as much as it didn’t specify that Mini-B USB cable had to be plugged in but knew Jamma edge connectors needed communication link to the PC.

One more thing, I see a lot power Jamma connectors are not used on J-PAC so it’s safe to say that connecting this directly to cab by Jamma is safe to do?

Thanks again for assistance :)

Yes, the JPAC gets it's power from USB so the JAMMA power isn't used but it's safe to plug in. Just make sure you attach the cab JAMMA connector the right way around!

I've done a few pc builds, remember to add a small amp or similar for sound. Also you can add a 5 and 6 button if you want to play Street fighter. You can do combo buttons for mame ui too. I added a button for slider, fir volume. I find mame games, sound volume can differ massively! Keep a copy of mame.ini .

Thanks for the info. Good shout! I didn’t think about needing a small amp for sound. I thought I could work out a way connect it to my cab speakers but just released an amp would be needed for speakers to operate! Duh! lol. You got any recommendations on a small amp to use?

I will definitely be using additional buttons for SF games ask 3s & SF2 Turbo :D

You mean in Mame controls you created custom button on your keyboard to control the +\- volume is that correct? (Very handy tip!)

Ypu can use the j-pac without at amp, its just not that loud, but is not that bad so you can test all ok with sound before you upgrade it.

In mame there is a Slider option so you can skip to volume , refresh rate, gamma settings etc . I have a button that brings up the slider then you can use the joystick left right to adjust sound its a lot easier !
I have a 2 player cab also , so I use the player 1 start to add credits/start and by combo's such as hold player 1 credit and press player 2 credit at same time it will exit game. The street fighter you just cable extra wires direct to the j-pac to your buttons. I have one of the £15 amps of here but you can get a pcb there for £5 if on a budget. The amp I got light up , but luckily its in the cab so you cant see it ! I changed a cam lock to add a small button, that is what brings the slider menu up !
This also acts as a safety feature so kids dont need to put hand in can to alter the amp volume !

Cheers for the information, greatly appreciated for all the advice :). I’m going to see how I can map the cab speaker wire connections to J-PAC without splicing any existing cables.

Need to find a female socket 3 Way TYCO Mate N-Lok cable with 3 pre-install crimped wires to save me the hassle lol.

Cheers
