Need some more help please.

I've been
able to exit mame by pressing U but now struggling to get back to
windows. Have gone through two menus as below, choosing restore windows
interface on first menu and then choosing "I'm ready, do it!" but then
nothing happens.

So how else do I get back to windows to reinstall graphics driver (have ordered a graphics card but waiting for it to arrive)?

If you're using Chunksin's image...

Set to read right mode first,

Then select restore windows.

To get back to make afterwards from Windows rerun the installer app (it only goes through the last steps)

Once back in Windows, set to read only mode again.

Job's a goodun!

A quick update to say that I bought a graphics card and with a lot of help from my mate have bnow pretty much got it all up and running.

The main remaining issue we've not been able to sort is that some vertical games are upside down. There doesn't seem to be any consistency between which ones are OK and which ones 180 out.

I've seen that you can set up a config zip file for each game which will solve it one by one but will be a pain to go through, check each game, see which ones need changing and doing the config file for all those. (Not going to do for games I don't want but there will still be 100s I would need to check!)

So wondering if there is a more global solution to apply to all games (when some are OK and some flipped) and also curious as to why some games are flipped 180 in the first place. eg Galaxian fine, Mr Do flipped. Pac Man fine, Ladybug flipped.

We're using mamewah as a front end with it set to rotate to full screen for vertical games as easy to rotate the monitor in the Goliath it's set up in (if that makes any difference)

I just wanted to add another solution. I switched from all these PC based solutions (tried several through the years) to Pi2Jamma with either pinHP-Image (based on AdvanceMame) or Regamebox (based on Rertroarch with several systems supported...C64, Amiga, Atari 2600 etc.). Unless you want to play the latest arcade videogames with 3D graphics, this is the way to go. Download the image, "burn" it to a MicroSD-card (maybe change the resolution from Low to High, depending on your screen)..done. Play!

Far better than Pandora's box.

Sorry, but I cannot agree that that a Pi solution can come close to Groovymame. Pi builds are still using ancient 10-15 year old versions of Mame and whilst they can output 15khz and interface to Jamma, they contain none of the lag reducing optimisations that Groovymame has. It's an acceptable option for simplicity if its replacing a regular old build of mame, but certainly not comparable to Groovymame.

Greg, can you paste your mame.ini file here to see whats going on. Also, when the screen is showing the windows desktop, do you have it as portrait or landscape ?

Got the screen in horizontal at mo but will rotate the physical monitor when I play vertical games but can see some games have top on left at mo, some have top at right.

Mame ini file copied below as wouldn't let me update the file as wrong file type.

Separate question -

Is there a list of all roms available in mame that's easy to navigate? Found this one but only 20 games per page so not easy to navigate:

I guess you're right. I'm not a hardcore gamer and I don't play the latest games, I'm stuck with the classics and for me the Pi-solution is absoluteley satisfying for playing a few games every now and then. I would never claim it's equal or even better to a well configured Groovymame-system, I have no clue about those lag reducing things you mentioned.

At least it's far better than Pandora's box (IMHO).

Greg,

In your ini folder, do you have a vertical.ini or a horizontal.ini file in there.

And if so, could you paste those here.

Also, when I asked about the orientation, I meant the windows orientation, not the monitor orientation, so if you have your monitor vertical, do you have to twist your neck to read the side on screen?

Probably not relevant though if you physically move your monitor.

Oh, and your mame.ini file seems to have been cropped, I was wanting to look at # CORE ROTATION OPTIONS

My mame.ini file has this section :

#

# CORE ROTATION OPTIONS

#

rotate 1

ror 0

rol 0

autoror 0

autorol 0

flipx 0

flipy 0

and also in ini/presets, i have a file called vertical.ini which has one line in it :

ror 1

You can change that to rol if it suits your monitor better.

I just tested galaxian and mr.do and they come out the same orientation.

No no horizontal.ini or vertical.ini or not at least in same folder as mame.ini

Have monitor horizontal at mo but yes if was vertical would have to twist neck to read properly, if that's what you mean:)

Ah yes, seems to be missing a bit for some reason. Here's rest of mame.ini:

I would say you need to change norotate 1 to rotate 1
and create a vertical.ini file with the 1 line as I stated above.

Note this is not in the same folder as your mame.ini file, it goes in the ini/presets folder

Thanks. Would this not apply to all games though as can't see how this would only select the games that need flipping?

I have gone through in the meantime and identified all the ones that do need flipping and found advice that said you need to add a text file called game.zip.cfg with video_rotation =1. So in theory I could add that file for each game to the roms folder and it would flip the screens of those games I need it to by 180. BUT have done this and it's not making any difference. Why would this not work?

I found it OK in the end to go through all the game roms on the link I pasted above so don't need a more user friendly list any more.

No, its fully automatic using the changes I have suggested.

Mame knows what needs to be rotated from its own internal dat file or whatever, and will look for the instruction in the vertical.ini file as to what to do when it encounters a relevant game. It will not rotate on a horizontal game.
You will need to remove any individual game ini files that you have made changes on.

Sorry to sound a bit thick but just want to be clear I'm doing what I need to!:)

It's not rotating ALL the vertical games that I need to do, just some of them. Doesn't seem to be any logic as to why some are the correct way up and some upside down. Horizontal games all seem OK.

So my fear is that your suggestion will rotate ALL vertical games so I'll just be swapping which ones are upside down.

Thanks for your help and sorry to question, just want to be sure it's achieving what I need.

Think I've sorted it now in case anyone has problems in future!

In the mame.ini file, mame core video options, I needed to set noratotae to 0 and autoror to 1.
