[ukvac] Meet 1.8 FAQ for Newbies... (long winded ;p)
> Finally, from someone who's been to one before, would the "1.8
meet" (who thinks up these names!!) in Honiton be a good weekend /
usefull to me. ie, would it be worth the 4/5 hour trip....
Ok... Thats probably a very good question and quite hard to justify.
Take a trip down the UKVAC Meet archives held at ukvac.org.uk - the
links are:
Meet 1.0: http://www.ukvac.org.uk/UKVAC_Meets/UKM1-0.htm
Meet 1.5: http://www.ukvac.org.uk/UKVAC_Meets/UKM1-5.htm
and 1.51: http://www.ukvac.org.uk/UKVAC_Meets/UKM1-51.htm
Meet 1.6: http://www.ukvac.org.uk/UKVAC_Meets/UKM1-6.htm (no write-
up, but tonnes of pictures to give you a taster)
Sadly meet 1.7 not got written up (Kipz??)
As you can see, the number of attendees grows steadily - one of the
best things about the meet is you get to put faces to the names and
flames of what is UKVAC
In the run-up to a meet you'll find people trowing up lists of things
they have/want (mines coming shortly fellas!) and part of the fun is
most attendees get a chance to grab a deal and take home a new pcb or
something
Communication and unification is what these meets are all about - us
neo-"oldies" have formed quite a close knit group and know each other
fairly well - if Andy Jones haddnt opened his doors to meet 1.5 I
doubt this would ever have happened.
OK... So an FAQ... hmm....
QU: WHY ARE THE MEETS CALLED 1.n?
AN: the first meet was labelled 1.0 as it was the first time ever
UKvacers congregated not knowing one another from Adam. The version
numbering system is really a gibe at software programming levels.
XY-Man devised the list, devised the meet and has reserved the
right for meet 2.0 to be held at his gaff at a future date...
Therefore each meet is a "one-point something"
QU: WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
AN: Anyone whose a lover of Video Arcade Machines and Nostalgia.
Oldies, Neo-Oldies and Newbies alike are always welcome.
Meet (1-7) also saw a large faction of emu'ers attend brought by
the now legendary Dogtours operations. This secretive bunch hogged an
upstairs room and read and drooled over unknown pcbs to the emulation
scene (they really do need to get more fresh air and get out and meet
people though ;p)
QU: WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
AN: It is customary at a meet for there to be 1 or 2 vacant JAMMA
cabs for people to display rare or unknown PCBs to the world at
large - these also make great testers for PCBs youre gonna buy/trade
at the Meets.
We see the meets as an opportunity for everyone to distribute or
re-distribute arcade stuff to the UKVAC Collective. If you've a board
or two you dont want then offer it here on the list - you'll find
nearly always a taker at the meet - and best of all most deals can be
made in advance of even getting there!
QU: I LIVE BLOODY MILES AWAY - IS IT REALLY WORTH IT?
AN: Interesting question - and one many people bar me should answer -
perhaps the Bro's Rose or Chad or anyone who made the haul to my meet
(1-6) down on the southern coast.
I think its perhaps worthy of noting that DogTours brought more
Southerners to the UK'North'Vac meet (1-7) than Northeners made! I
think that in itself presents the efforts others make to get to these
meets.
QU: BUT I KNOW ANYBODY! THIS IS PUTTING ME OFF
AN: Each meet has a new raft of people who've never met before. And
at the end of each meet theres still people you've never met
We've
had name badges before - they were a success - I'm sure we'll re-
introduce them again.
Everyone should also try to find car companions also as this way
youve already met and made firm acquantances with a few VAC'ers
before the meet, saves the environment.
QU: I'VE BEEN THE SUBJECT OF a D-ZINE 'FRIDAY THOUGHTS'. IS IT SAFE
FOR ME TO ATTEND?
AN: BE AFRAID - BE VERY AFRAID!!
***NO*** Seriously, this is a muck-about - Dogs are kept on leads
at all times at these meets - D-Zine similarly will be the life and
soul of the party: he'l respect you for coming ;P
QU: <Cant think of any more>
AN: Stop Waffling then RAVAGE!
Cheers Fellas!
