Midway Tron Restoration

Now the bit I really wasn't looking forward to - the inner art.

This has to be cut to size and is a royal pain to fit.

I had taken measurements of my old art before I removed it and studied other peoples pics too.

Thankfully the art is plastic and stretchy which made it somewhat more possible.

I didn't get both sides matching perfectly but to be honest I really don't notice that anymore.

Like a lot of cabs sometimes artwork/stencils etc aten't done perfectly at the factory so I'm not stressed about it.





And with that, finally all the artwok was done!

Now to see if I can get the game working..

So... voltages checked, monitor connections adapted and ready for the big switch on...



Yes, this board set works!

Some issues though... the sync pot on the monitor is pretty flaky and requires tweaking often. I still need to replace that so will be doing a bit of servicing in the future.

But, no sound

After investigation I found out I had not connected up the 12 volts AC from the brick in the transformer.

That will be why I had a spare connector spot on the Arcadeshop switching adapter! (Did you spot that?)

Luckily I have some spare Tron parts so found the offending missing lead and wired it in...



Awesome, now I hear that great music and tanks rumble. I really like the audio on this game.

I decided to check board set number 2... Cool that works too so I have a spare.

I haven't yet tried board set 3 (the one I posted pics of earlier with the nasty ribbon connectors).

So, at this stage it was time to get the game into the house where it will live for the time being.

There are still jobs to do - back doors need to be made and I need to adapt and wire up the coin door.

The door I have was originally from a Gorf so has a different connector and no lights but that's not a particularly difficult job.

Then the aforementioned monitor tweaks and a couple of other little things.

So without further ado, here are a couple of money shots of the cab in its new home. Hope you enjoyed following the long winded restoration!









I'll probably post up again when I get these other jobs done, but I'm not in any hurry.

I really enjoyed this resto... Tron is an iconic and gorgeous looking cab. Although it had its ups and downs and certainly isn't 100% mint in every way I've ended up with a very presentable cab. Now if I can just get past the BASIC level...
