older roms in newer mame?

I'm using roms I had for mame 0.178 in a newer 0.205 I'm finding a
fair few don't work! For example Gorf reports missing sc 01a bin?

Of
the 120 or so games I want to use probably 35 of them report missing
roms, I thought the roms would work in all versions or am I missing
something?

The closer your romset is to the version of MAME you're using the less likely you are to encounter this problem.

Ideally you want to be using a matched romset.

new features have been added, such as emulating the SC-01 instead of using samples, so Gorf and Wizard of Wor now need that extra rom (which is actually the data held inside the SC-01 chip)

in the same way additional (previously unused) roms and pals are now required to have a complete set.

annoying, I know, but that is the way it is!

You ideally need a set of roms that matches the version of the mame executable. Otherwise you'll need to work out what roms you have need updating and find the updates which rapidly becomes tedious.

Thanks guys, I suspected it might be the case, I will need to set it all up on 0.178, I'm more wanting to use older games anuway so should be fine
