What I restored:

"CAPCOM VS. SNK: MILLENNIUM FIGHT 2000 UPRIGHT MARQUEE CVS1110" (CAPCOM) arcade artwork restored by Mikonos for Zona Arcade's site

INFO: Restoration of the Capcom vs. SNK: Millennium Fight 2000 upright arcade marquee CVS1110 from the manufacturer CAPCOM, which I had stored for about 14 years. It took me so long because I wasn't quite sure how to approach this restoration work, as the file was poorly soldered in three parts, had a resolution of 150 dpi, and looked somewhat blurry.

My work consisted of correctly assembling the images, increasing the resolution to 300 dpi, achieving perfect sharpness, and cleaning it up. I decided to remaster all the text, logos, and characters and lowered the contrast, as it was very overexposed. Now you can see Ryu and Kyo's faces perfectly sharp and with much more detail, which was previously hidden by the very high contrast. You can see all of this in the final sample-by-sample comparison.

What I restored:

"TITLE FIGHT RED CONTROL PANEL OVERLAY / CPO HWC-2102-A" (SEGA) arcade artwork restored by Mikonos for Zona Arcade

INFO: The Title Fight Red Control Panel Overlays from SEGA are two panels (red HWC-2102-A, and blue HWC-2013-A2) that use metallic silver in certain areas of their design. I think this is the most striking aspect of their design. Regarding the restoration, I have to say it was a bit of a struggle because I had to deal with somewhat blurry scanned files, and it took more time than the original design and condition of the control panels from which the digitization was obtained would have required.

"AERO CITY MINT GREEN COLOR CONTROL PANEL OVERLAY / CPO TQ-00035X" (SEGA) arcade artwork restored by Zona Arcade & Mikonos

INFO: Aero City Mint Green Color Control Panel Overlay is one of the color variations of this arcade artwork. The design is indistinguishable from the more common blue version, except for the color, and even shares the same part number: TQ-00035X.

Here you can see the only 600 dpi scanned and restored version of the original Aero City Control Panel by Mikonos for the Zona Arcade website.

"STREET FIGHTER III 3RD STRIKE MOVE LIST 33S994003-2" (CAPCOM) Jap. ver. arcade artwork file restore by Mikonos for Zona Arcade' site

INFO:
I have to admit that the artwork "Street Fighter III 3rd Strike Move List 33S994003-2" (CAPCOM) and its Japanese counterpart made me sweat during the restoration process due to their lack of sharpness, mainly because a previous restorer did a terrible job without really knowing what they were doing. Ironically, they didn't dare fix the most serious problem with these pieces: the awful, completely blurry assembly of the two scanned files they were made from.

I think I'll add a before-and-after comparison, which will be something I'm doing for the first time with this type of artwork, since I usually spend two or three hours on these kinds of pieces, but both move list stickers took me three days.

INFO:
The Virtua Striker 2 Instruction Sticker, part number 422-0611-01, manufactured by SEGA, this arcade artwork was scanned at 600 dpi and restored from the originals belonging to Zona Arcade and Mikonos. This specific version of the instructions is the one used on candy arcade cabinets, , but I've also seen it on the large control panel of SEGA's upright arcade cabinets.

The narrow version of this sticker for upright arcade cabinets is also available and has been restored by Mikonos within Zona Arcade.

"AERO CITY VOLUME CONTROL PANEL AND AUDIO OUTPUT CHROME STICKERS" (SEGA) ver. 2 arcade artworks restored by Mikonos

INFO: To make the Aero City Volume Control Panel and Audio Output Chrome Stickers from manufacturer SEGA more lore-friendly, this version of the artwork includes the mirrored chrome details seen on the Control Panel Overlay. I think this result is much more consistent with the rest of the sticker set specifically designed for this arcade cabinet.

"DODONPACHI DAIOUJOU INSTRUCTION STICKER" (CAVE) Jap. ver. arcade artworks restored by Zona Arcade and Mikonos

INFO: The digital restoration of "Dodonpachi Daioujou Instruction Stickers" from the manufacturer CAVE was, I must admit, more work than I initially thought. The problem lay in the incorrect merging of two scanned files, which resulted in several texts being incomplete. Adding to this, it was embedded within a dot pattern that had lost a lot of definition due to JPG compression, and the original scanner had done a poor job of cloning it. My solution, and the reason for the considerable time invested, was to recreate the dot pattern, isolate all the text and image, complete it, redo certain effects, and then paste it onto the pattern. You can see the before and after comparison to appreciate the effort involved.

What I restored:

"JAMBO! SAFARI NAOMI SIDE ARTS JBA-1012UK, JBA-1015UK (Left), JBA-1013UK, JBA-1016UK (Right)" (SEGA) arcade artworks scanned at 600 dpi and restored by Mikonos and Zona arcade

INFO: The artworks "Jambo! Safari Naomi Side Arts JBA-1012UK, JBA-1015UK (Left), JBA-1013UK, and JBA-1016UK (Right)" from SEGA are taken from an original arcade cabinet and have therefore suffered some distortion. This is evident when digitizing the artwork and attempting to align it for digital restoration. Since the black lines represent a recurring pattern in almost all the artworks, I decided to vectorize them for this reason and others explained below.

Partially vectorizing the artworks would allow me to create bleeds to add consistent excess material during the plotter cutting process and also ensure complete continuity across the two stickers that make up the side art on each side. I observed something quite common: the JBA-1013UK and JBA-1016UK stickers (Right Side Art), which overlap by 1 cm, They were almost 2 cm short of a perfect fit, and there was a 5 mm offset from the vertical line. This means that if I were to simply restore these artworks by layering the stickers on the legs of the Naomi Cabins, a noticeable cut or discontinuity would be visible.

*Why do I say it's normal for the stickers not to fit perfectly? Because many of these units were made in different places and at different times, and cutting plotters weren't as precise in the past as they are today. By restoring the artworks this way, I improve the original result. I could even do a single print for all the side art, and it would look perfect. All on one vinyl sheet.

"Astron Belt Joystick Decal" (BALLY/MIDWAY) printed on vinyl with rough/hard protective lamination and precut.

INFO: This is a printed reproduction of the Astron Belt Joystick Decal from the manufacturer BALLY/MIDWAY, which I've produced in a unique way. Because it's a sticker exposed to frequent handling, I wanted to do something different and protected it with a rough, hard laminate. This ensures the sticker's durability and longevity for at least a couple of decades.

The rough/hard laminate is the same one I use for reproducing most of my control panel overlays, as it's vandal-resistant.
