[ukvac] OT: Broadband suggestions...
Very quiet here! Everyone on holiday or something?

Anyways, thought i'd generate at least a little traffic with a nice
OT post!

Problem is this...

Getting such a huge volume of wrong number calls that we're
seriously looking at changing our number. However, with my broadband
company, they want £65 to change the number. They reckon as it's
ADSL they have to effectively do a reconnect!!

I've previously asked them about upgrading from 512 to 1mb, they
wanted almost £70 for that too. Theiving bastards. Despite being
very crap, at least when i was on cable with NTL things like this
didn't cost a penny!

Right, so not surprisingly i don't feel like giving PlusNet a penny
more.

So who else comes recommended then, and how much will it cost for
1mb, with static IP?

I currently pay £29.99 for 512kb and a static.

Ta for any advice.

Martin.

Re: [ukvac] OT: Broadband suggestions...

To be honest, I dont thunk you'll find a comparible package
for that kind of price anywhere else - PlusNet have very special
relations with BT meaning they can offer ADSL as silly prices
compared to others. However, if you dont mind paying 5-15
quid a month more, theres other companies. but they all seem
to have silly rules regarding minimum contracts and reconnection
charges etc - bear in mind with the changing number thing or upgrading
line speeds it IS essentially a terminate and reconnect thing, so
it's BT driving the price, not the ISP...

You wont find a comparable package? eh?

Zen internet (consistently rated as one of the fastest adsl providers by the
internet speed check) £23.82 per month plus vat

"BANDWIDTH TO SPARE
We guarantee NO CONTENTION on our network. Uncompromised service with
bandwidth investment that stays ahead of customer demand is the only sure
way to deliver performance that provides full Internet enjoyment and
business-critical reliability."

I've had to phone technical support once when setting up the router and for
the first time EVER I spoke to someone _competent_ working for an ISP!! and
they weren't answering calls in India either!

I'd give them 10 out of 10

Hey! We don't have anyone from India in our call centre :) I'd say only 2
or 3 out of the 20 of them are shit too!

RE: [ukvac] OT: Broadband suggestions...
After being a bit peeved at my ISP they actually quite surprised me by
paying my dial up call charges while my ADSL was down!!! Mind you it
was their fault, but then it was BT's fault back when I had downtime at
BTOpenWorld and they didn't give me a penny! Anyways I pay
£57.something for 1mb static IP adsl with Nildram, BUT here's the thing
I like... It’s a monthly rolling contract so you can cancel it with a
months notice at *any* time! I've already moved house and upgraded my
adsl speed with no problems with them, think I'm quite happy now that
they're quite a good company. Seem to get slower access speeds compared
to BTOpenWorld though, seems that's more to do with the DNS though.

Does that include the IPs he wanted????

And note the PLUS VAT

I don't see how they can guarantee that when it's BT that set contention,
not the ISP, this is pure marketting waffle

You say this as if it's special? I only had to EMAIL my ISP ONCE
to get the set up info and never since - you shouldn't need
to be constantly on to TS, and in my experience you don't, so the
above is nothing special in my opinion.

> I'd give them 10 out of 10

Like I said, or at least hinted at - option for option comparisons
possibly fall flat

I'm with Leeds based business ISP FirstNet, btw, who I can recommend,
but might cost you more (I have a deal with them for my line
so it's cheap for me)

Who do you work for Oll?

If i put in www.lineone.net i get Tiscali, is that right?

Anyways, didn't have any intention of starting a flame war or
anything :O)

I'll check out some of these recommendations when i'm bored out of
my mind sat in me hotel room later (again!). Ironically over my
SERIOUSLY SLOW gprs phone connection :O)

I guess i should really have said that i don't mind paying maybe a
tenner more as i don't pay for it anyway, i expense it. Basically,
anything above what i pay now (£30) i'll pay and expense the rest.

I would further add, that i'd rate PlusNet pretty high on everything
BUT support. I spent nearly all day last Thursday trying to convince
them that my ADSL outage was NOT due to me, only to see at about
4:30 the conection reset itself several times and then everything
was fine (which was not my doing).

If they'd pulled their finger out of their own arse and investigated
initially then they would have known that there was a huge outage in
Reading which was effecting as far as Exeter, and i wouldn't have
had to spend all day convincing them it wasn't me.

That kind of ignorance makes my blood boil and tips the balance with
wanting to find an alternative.

As with many ISPs, when it works, they're good, but when it don't,
they're oh so ever so bad (if you get what i mean!).

Anyway, must get in the car and drive for 3 hours to work (groan!),
will read through the rest when i get there.

Ta,
Martin.

Wow - 2 of my mates are on plusnet and they love it. My NTHell is
terrible (512k), lost connection 6 times this year due to network
faults and terrible customer service also. Really crap DNS servers
too and the mail - jeez
So u wouldn't recommend plusnet then - was going to change to them
in the new year ...

I use freedom to surf for my DSL - www.f2s.com

They offer 512 or 1mb lines... Usual sorta fares

best thing about them is that the cancellation period is 1 month -
none of this sign up for 12 months milarky...

I find the ervice good and reliable

Just threw my tuppence in

My 2p's worth:

I'm getting my BB from Blueyonder, and it's been pretty much a no brainer.

Selfcare means you don't have to spend 30-40mins on the phone trying to
get another MAC address added, and I've *Never* had any connection issues,
except for the 20minutes it was down whilst they were patching up the
cable in the road ;-p

Isn't Blueyonder cable, not ADSL?

I was quite happy with my cable service before i moved house. Okay,
NTL were utter shite and the service was slow (for 1mbit), but it
worked well all the time.

Sadly, apparently when cable was laid all the way down the A30 to
Exeter it went straight along the bypass and not into town, so
there's a big fat ZERO chance of getting cable here :O)
