[ukvac] OT: Digital Cameras
Just a general question which I thought I'd ask onlist because so many of us use digital cameras...

Planning to purchase a new (or S/H for that matter) sub-£300 camera...previously we have used various Kodak models on semi-permanent loan from work (naughty!), but with the massive diversity of stuff on the market, I wondered if anyone had any recommendations as to either: a. What to avoid or b. Any thoughts re. experiences with specific makes/models...

I've been doing some research, but must admit to being a tad reluctant to part with the cash in the face of so much choice!

Required specs are fairly vague, but with a new baby on the way, the possibility of recording short video clips would probably be a must...

Any thoughts?

Anyone?

Alan )

Hi Alan,

If you want to spend a little more (or perhaps s/h) I can recommend the Canon Powershot G3 ..... takes brilliant pictures. My wife bought one to use along side her Canon SLR camera, but since getting the G3, the SLR hasn't been used! Can also recommend the Canon i950 printer if you want to print out excellent quality pictures.

Regards,

Steve.

Having just had my dad go through this, and seeing what he got, I think I can
thoroughly recommend taking a small step backwards and taking your time.

Go to any local camera shops you may have and see what they have that is second
hand. Who the hell needs a brand spanking new thing with 5 billion trillion
megapixels anyway???

Professionals working in the photographic and / or publishing trade's yes, not
the casual hobbyist arcade collector that wants to record his hobby and his new
daughter / son growing up, that's for sure!

Me dad picked up some Minolta jobbie that is 3.something megapixels. It is a
quality, well made unit that is made of some metal, not plastic. It's pretty
small, has a lovely zoom lense built in and takes quality video clips too. Has
the (now) usual night mode's and things.

TBH, it made me realise just how old my 3 year old Fuji Finepix 2200 is now
looking. The full price for my Fuji when it was new was £375 (okay, I got it
half price, but that's another story based on a PC World slip up!), and me dad
paid something like £125 for this Minolta jobbie.

Lesson learnt on my part I think :O)

Thought I'd pass it on...

Obviously you could always try part-ex'ing the Holloseum in for one!

If anyone wants a deal of a lifetime.. I have 5 HP Photosmart cameras
available (do a search on the internet for reviews). These are still for
sale on the high street at around £250... yours for £190. HP are shifting
them to allow for a new model. I sold 5 last week.... am so impressed with
them that I bought one for myself. 4 Megapixel, 3 x Optical zoom, 7 x
Digital zoom.... Pentax lens.... beautiful pictures!
