[ukvac] OT: Ebay Western Union Scam - in reverse?
Ok, I'm not going to reply to this and I've blocked the bidder but I don't
get where this scam is leading . what happens next? Even if I was stupid
enough to send name and address details, how could they get my money? Or
I'm guessing that it is more likely an attempt to hijack my ebay id?

Anyone else got one of these?

"I would like to know if you would consider shipping the camera to Buenos
Aires, Argentina. If so, how much would airmail cost? Regarding the payment
methods, because of Argentina's delicate economic and banking situation I
can only send the money through a Western Union "person to person" wire. For
this I need your full name and address. The second after I make the wire, I
have to mail you the transfer number and with that you can go to your
nearest Wester Union office and collect the cash. Can you accept this
payment method?"

My best regards,

Moniccina

I actually think this is legit (if you are the buyer), but I am not sure...
I had one guy in Norway ask me if I did COD last week!

The way the scam works is that the guy flys all the way over from
Argentina, moves into your house and takes over your identity. He
can only do this if he has your Name and Address. Luckily UK phone
books are not available in Argentina so this is the only way they can
get this information.

My mate Geoff was a victim of this scam, although he now prefers to
be called Sanchez.

Have a look at www.westernunion.com for more details.

i have accepted Western Union for payment for items before when i have been
a seller, from places such as portugal, and had no problem. They send the
money (at great extra cost), you go collect it, then you send the item.
Cant see how it would be a scam.

Kev.

Scam or not (and I think it may be genuine), I think it would be too much effort
having to lug myself to the nearest office just to collect the money when
another bidder would just pay normally. Of course, if you're really close to an
office, then maybe.

The thought of shipping to Argentina is the most worrying bit ... I wouldn't
be surprised that they'll claim it doesn't arrive, then I'll have to claim
on the insurance and refund ...and then maybe they have the camera and the
cash!

Who knows ... maybe I'm just cynical but I've been burnt by a guy in the US
who had excellent feedback - he just disappeared up his own arse one day,
never to be seen again!

Ultimately, it's too much like hard work and the listing said UK only - it
just read too well, almost scripted!

CONFIDENTIAL E-MAIL FROM SLAUGHTER AND MAY

That's not a scam, that's just how he wants to pay. You can find your
nearest Western Union and let him know which office it is, then he wires the
money to you. He just wants to pay you and has no other way of transferring
money from Argentina.

What made you think it was a scam Steve?

I guess a combination of the following :

1) Why buy a used digital camera from the UK? The US is far cheaper.
2) The mail sounded *too* reassuring about Western Union.
3) Only one feedback, too old to see what the item was.
4) The mail format sounded familiar although not the common "send a WU money
order"
5) Why is it the *only* way to pay? Can't Argentinians use Paypal?
6) It's a girl .. how many girls buy gadgets as their 2nd ebay trade.
7) If the country is in so much disarray as claimed, could I trust the postal
service?
8) Why make such a deal about knowing my name and address since ebay sends taht
to the winning bidder anyway?
9) I'm a cynical bas*ard.

Being careful, I can't lose. Being pessimistic, she may not pay up and I have a
load of crap filing a NPB etc.

Yeah, I'd block any woman threatening to bid on a gadget with less than 5
feedback. I had a girl win a Mac i-book off me and she didn't respond to
emails so I called her and she told me her washing machine had packed up and
now she needed the money for that so she couldn't pay. When I gave her a
negative feedback she dropped to -1.

I got bored reading the whole thread, so this might have already been said
but this is how it works.

The guy needs your address to give to Western Union as they will ask you for
proof of identity.

You just go along to your local Western Union (ASDA do this by the way) with
your drivers licence and then they hand you cash, there are no cheques to
clear and no chargebaack risks! Personally I would never do paypal
internationally are you are MUCH more likely to get scammed this way. With
Western Union you get nice cash and it costs the seller about £17 to send
the money so they must be serious!!
