Cool, 12x12 pixel ones? that move on 4 pixel boundaries?

You can also flicker them to give the illusion of more sprites, but at the cost of flickery sprites lol

Hadn't thought of that

was trying a different way first to get my data structure and logic going.

Not an update but just wanted to give a shout out for the Mame debugger it's pretty much awesome, love it.

Not got anything I want to show on the demo yet but coming along nicely.

I'm finding the hardest thing is to remember the z80 instruction set, used to know it like the back of my hand but my short term memory issues are causing me no end of grief.

My code is probably horribly inefficient and very clunky because I can't remember the best ways to handle certain circumstances.

Got a A level computing mock exam to invigilate this afternoon so will try and make some more progress then.

The MAME debugger is the single best piece of software I've ever used in my life, period.

Without it my life would be but a hollow, empty existence!
smiley36.gif

Grab the official Zilog Z80 user manual to help out with the instruction set.

I'll also agree on the mame debugger. I've currently got it setup to go through the software for an ABI Chip master. Mame itself is making it really easy to setup a quick test environment for such things.

Ok got some basic independent routines working now, still not that impressive but not bad for a retard
smiley1.gif

Got a little frame counter and simple timer system to allow routines to control how often they are serviced. All pretty simple at the moment, but at least the checker board scrolls quite smoothly, only used 16 tiles for that effect. It's a shame you can't flip em, that would save quite a bit.

Lot's of ideas for animating tile effects, still to implement (work out how I might implement

)

I'm am so remembering why I loved assembler, it's so rewarding even with crappy stuff like this, thanks Adrian

look at it in 480p60 for best viewing

Wow! I'm honoured to be mentioned, by name, in someone else's demo!

Cheers Eric!

I feel like all the hard work that I did is slowly starting to pay off now that I've got at least one person interested in homebrew coding for arcade hardware. Now we need to get some of these other lazy butts coding too....

And you're right, asm coding is very rewarding! Confusing at times, but ultimately much more rewarding than any of this modern day, high level crap.

nice one Hurray B if it ends up as a game it would be fun if we had a high score compo for it

Cheers everyone

Spending most of the time debugging my very poor logic choices
smiley9.gif
(at least I'm getting to know my way around the mame debugger
smiley4.gif
)

Got a couple of ideas of simple games I could write on this hardware, 8 sprites isn't very many.

Never gonna produce something as awesome and polished as Pac Manic Miner (doff my cap towards Jim), but it is definitely something to strive towards.

Just loving (again) doing assembly. Don't think I'll go back to the extremes of spending 2 months on paper working out the quickest way to draw a horizontal line for a scan convertor,but hours have disappeared here without noticing them.

Once I've cut me teeth I will look at some more powerful hardware.
