https://blog.us.playstation.com/2018/09/18/introducing-playstation-classic-with-20-pre-loaded-games/

Almost 25 years ago, the original PlayStation was introduced to the world. Developed by Sony Computer Entertainment, it was the first home console in video game history to ship 100 million units worldwide, offering consumers a chance to play games with real-time 3D rendered graphics in their homes for the first time.

Today, we are excited to announce that we are bringing back the original PlayStation experience in a new miniaturized version – PlayStation Classic! The console will come pre-loaded with 20 classic titles, including fan-favorites such as Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms.

Looks pretty cool. Anyone want to speculate as to the likelihood of being able to hack and run additional games?

Depends if anything is hidden under the back panel, plus I expect with the size of disc based games there won't be much space left in the storage.

Lots of complaints online but I put in a pre-order via amazon anyway. I don't run a Pi setup and never owned an original unit back in the day. Lack of dualshock is a negative but I can't wait to see what other games they put on it. Can see these units flying off the shelves.

More games TBA, would love to see the following included:

Metal Gear Solid

Resi 2

Tomba

Crash Bandicoot

Castlevania Symphony of the Night

Tomb Raider 2

Spyro

Bushido Blade

Still got my son's original Playstation that we chipped. Got a big box full of games. Originals and copies. Thought numerous times about chucking it out bu suspect we'll keep it forever. The PS2 on the other hand... never could get attached to it. Think that'll be getting chucked sometime soon.

I was lucky to have parents who didn’t complain (much) that I’d begged for a Saturn for Xmas only to then ask for a PS a few months later.

Don’t know how well the games will have aged but I had so much fun with the PS - the big titles like RE, MGS and FF, but also games like V-Rally and Syphon Filter. Still have my original (well, shop replacement after the laser died) PS and games, but as with everything these days I struggle to find room amongst all the kids stuff throughout the house, so looking forward to the mini version.

The remaining games TBA as Sony still finalising copyright deals with the developers?

My inbox has been bombarded with this today ... I guess I was 'Mr. PlayStation' back in the day.
I have more Sony consoles than I need, but still tempted

My main concern/interest is what they do to the graphics over hdmi. PlayStation 1 looks pretty ragged now on a large TV, even a large CRT over scart. The fixed-point maths caused loads of jittering of the polygons and caused tears/gaps between them, which ages the console a lot.
Will Sony apply a blanket 'smooth' filter over the lot to lessen this like the PS2 backwards compatibility? Or will they bilinear filter the textures, like you can do in emulation already.
Will they upres/double/triple the screen res so the polygon edges are uber-smooth, or will it just be a straight upscale to 720p of the entire screen display?
As a developer we had to go all around the houses to fix the issues with all this stuff.

I'm sure before long it'll be smashed wide open and modded to run any .iso you want. Which it needs to be really, given the rarity of finding a PSX with a perfect running lazer these days.

As an aside Jumping Flash is an interesting one. I'd love to work on an HD VR remake of that game. Loved Robbit since the very early days, totally Japanese and bonkers.

Oh all the best ones like Ridge Racer, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid...

No, I'm kidding

I made kiddies stuff like Chicken Run (with Aardman / Eidos), Glover (and the N64 version beforehand), and WarGames.
(By PS2 generation things got less kiddiefied...)

Some classics on the ps1
Hours spent as a youth smoking fags and playing demolition derby time crisis and porche challenge at the youth club

Sadly try playing demolition derby now
And see if you can make a car out from the horrible jagged triangles

Your doing well if you can play for longer than 5 min without your eyes bleeding

I wouldent mind trying metal gear again to see if it still holds up

I still have 3 or 4 PS1s and all the games I ever pretty much wanted on it, so will be sticking with the original. I ended up buying a mini snes despite having something like 18 of the games and several Snes consoles, I've used it once, the NES mini I don't think I have even tried yet.

I do like the mini's though, its a great way to re-introduce some of these older classics to the younger generations. I imagine this PS1 one will do very well.

For backwards compatibility, you can play previous PlayStation titles on newer consoles, but some work and others don't, the list is quite random.

The original PlayStation blew my mind playing Ridge Racer for the first time, and playing WipeOut during every waking hour one new years eve in between nights out clubbing. We fell about laughing at the safety warnings - don't play when tired (check), don't play in a dark room (check), don't turn the volume up too loud (check), don't sit too close to the screen (check).

If those 2 games ain't on the classic, Sony are in trouble.

But that was just the start really... amazing how that corporate media company that made tv's and stereos dominated gaming for at least 7 years straight.
