Project 10 seconds

I have set myself a new project. That is to build a system that will from Cold power on get to a mame front end ready to start a game within 10 seconds.

The ASRock Instant boot is the obvious choice with a skinny Win7.

Watch this space.

chip and MicroXP thats not too far off 15ish seconds

Ive got a dual core PC with tiny xp that takes around 10-15 secs. It's do-able.

Xp is awesome, The biggest Ho of any OS, Do what you like to it!

XP is a good OS for it's time I agree, however it's been superceeded since then by many.

don't forget that nothing will work on windows 8 until they sort out the new versions / drivers / etc.

I still have hardware that doesn't fully support windows 7 so it's definately not going to like me throwing windows 8 at it!

I can try MAME on it in a minute, I have Windows 8 already. Stay tuned.

why not use mame for DOS ? and one of the front ends, that will be booted before the screen is warmed up.....

Unfortunately they don't build for DOS anymore, the newest one is now quite old. Wish they did cos DOS had a few advantages over modern os's.

ah yeh, i guess if you need to play games that are newer than the dos builds.... it is a real shame, no problems worrying about turning off without shutting down, etc -

I remember i think 10 years ago or so now I rewired an old jamma cab from scratch with a pc / ide hd running dosmame, cant remember the name of the frontend, but it also had a config to make the vga card output 15khz for the proper arcade monitor so no special cards or monitors were needed. must have been a while back, i seem to remember it was a p166 or similar speed !

if you guys feel the need, the need for speed...

you should look out for the next version of mameuifx to be released.

to quote the author himself:

Mameuifx is a cracking version of mame, worth it for the easy high score save alone!

And old Intel 3.2 GHZ HT. The SSD chip is 1GB from a Dell FX160. Ill test boot time when I get a chance.

I got a spare SD if you want to install MicroXp. End of the day XP might be old, but it works! so why use bloatware

Id put 7 and XP head to head anyday for boot time.

My career is Enterprise Desktop IT, you could say I know XP and 7 very well, the TCP stack alone boots 2 seconds quicker in 7 X64.

Its all about the motherboard and I can 100% assure you if you are using P4 era hardware, the Motherboard boot time will be as much as a good 7 System in total.
