Can anyone lend some advice on the power mod for the PSC?

I've tried lots combinations different autobleem installations on 5 different USB sticks (all FAT32 and named SONY) none of which seemed to work so I decided to do the power mod. The tiny tiny resistors are so hard for me to see and solder with my massive soldering tip, I thought I had bridged the resistors correctly but still couldn't get this to work. I then tried a blob of solder which clearly covered/joined all four contacts on the resistors. In this state it took a bit longer to power up and then gave an error about controller in port 1 not being recognised. I should probably mention that I've only attempted the mod on the (RH) player 2 side.

I decided it might be easier on my eyes if I just removed the resistors entirely and cleaned it up with a scratch pen. I'm sure I read somewhere it was okay to remove the resistors.

I'm now at the stage of the below picture as you can see the right hand side of the resistors were joined (2) and 3 is ground. do I simply need to join points 1,2 and 3? When I joined all for contacts previously I had the above problem but I suppose this could have been down to a cold joint not correctly bridging all of the connections.

Is this simply a case of you have to do both ports in order for it to work or am I missing something else fundamental?

Thanks

Steve

You can use an OTG cable now if you won't want to do the hardware mod. You do have to flash the firmware still using USB 2.0 + bleemsync however.

Thanks Flinnster, I did try an OTG type (was from an old hub that used a split usb cable for supplementary power) I had lying around but still no joy..

to your knowledge is this okay without the resistors and should I try to join the three contacts?

What model USB stick are you using?

I've got an old Lexar Firefly USB2.0 stick that runs the original AutoBleem image just fine and I was able to flash the firmware using it. Then I have a Sandisk UltraFit USB3.1 (256Gb) mini flash drive running in an OTG cable at the rear of the console (both controller ports free).

I had a series of PNY USB 2.0 16Gb sticks fail on me when trying to firmware flash the classic. Don't use PNY sticks!

(My classic is totally original internally, it's not been opened at all)

Just bridged points 1,2 and 3 then it worked with an old 4GB Imation.

The console works the same with or without the resistors removed but obviously only delimits the power if either the left hand side of the resistors are shorted. Or if the resistors are removed then points 1,2 and 3 need to be shorted.

If your eyesight's not great or you've got a big tip then a blob of solder that covers both of the left hand resistor contacts and at least one on the right side will suffice.

My next issue is USB compatibility I've got hundreds of sticks that are 16 GB or less but only one 128GB (SanDisk SDCZ48-128G-U46) stick which I bought for this purpose. I didn't bother checking any compatibility lists as I assumed that the only thing stopping different models of USB working was the power issue. So do we know what causes compatability issues with some USB sticks?

Was wondering if its because windows won't format larger than 32gb to FAT32 by default?

Then again others are using larger drives without issues.. but are they using the front port or the rear, I wouldn't have thought that there was a difference but maybe there is once the firmware has been patched? Or maybe it's as simple as that my partition software (Easus PM) isn't setting the file system correctly.

I've ordered a proper OTG cable now so when it arrives I'll see how it goes, but i'd like to get my 128GB USB working in the front just for the sake of knowing how to do it.

If it's allowed please could you direct me to the bleemsync patch that you used? I've got a bad habbit of finding old info so would be good to have info that is verified as working.

Err... no idea but.. my 256Gb is FAT32 format, straight from Windows. No utils used.
Shouldn't be any difference on what port is used either, it's all 'just USB'.

Yep so, FAT32 format the 128GB, and use it in the right hand port.
Make sure an AutoBleem image works from it first.

Then if it does, follow the instructions -exactly- here (just the "(Including OTG setup)" section):

Well it took about 5 minutes to do that! Thanks!

I've got it working with various USB sticks with different filesystems. I've even got it running on an external SSD and HDD. As well as opening up the rear port the Hacked firmware increases compatibility with USB sticks and even opens it up to NTFS, but the PSC still Hates my Sandisk 128GB USB! I'm happy that I exhausted all avenues and the stick is just not compatible so I'll just get another one.

So if anyone is looking to do this do not buy a SanDisk SDCZ48-128G-U46 Ultra USB Flash Drive!
