So, having just spent a week up in my loft I've come across my old PS2 (original release version) with iffy laser in the drive. Is it any use for anything or do I just take it down the recycle centre? I'm open to hacking projects on this one!

PS: This isn't the one you kindly sent me Tim - that one is still in use and appreciated by Shaz

Well it's always worth having a PS2, what ever the situation, some real good games there, that will one day be considered classics. Also, playback on PS3 (original) isn't always guaranteed, and not supported at all on the Slim.

If the laser's on it's way out, you won't really get much for it if you sell. Also, the originals usually had power supply problems (fan related I think). I know if I bought a second hand one, I'd look at the slim version for just that reason.

So what the hell, hack that badboy to pieces, enjoy yourself

I'm erring on the side of "bin it" too. I was kind of wondering if there were any hacks and projects like there are for the original xbox. I've got no interest in playing the games on it!

Recycle it don't bin it.

I anticipate this seasons Car Boot sales being full of cheap PS2 consoles, and plan to pick up a few replacements/spares then, as mine has had the CD lense go, but still reads DVDs.

Probably find it just needs the laser cleaning, everytime someone has said to me it needs a a new laser, taking it apart and cleaning the laser has fixed it.

Anyway, if you want, you can send it to me, I need a PS2 to play some Guncon games in.
