Just thought I'd start a thread on the Pi 4 so we can post any updates on rumors, development, images and packages that get released as it's fairly early days and everyone is really keen to see what the new Pi can do

Have to say I am totally impressed with the new board, the release took me by surprise as I wasn't expecting it until next year but snapped a couple up as soon as they launched. Bought a 2GB model which I think might be the one to go for if you're after an emulation setup and a 4GB to test it out as a desktop replacement. So many good things in the new package, USB 3.0, gigabit ethernet, new processor and graphics core, all awesome, the only thing I'd complain about is the dual 4k video out - do we need this in a single board computer? who asked for it?! could be Raspberry Pi Foundation showboating a bit or going firmly for the desktop market, who knows but it's annoying! I'd have been perfectly happy with a single full size HDMI, I don't mind the USB C for power as it can also act as a USB host port which is funky, not sure I'll ever use it mind you ...

Onto performance, it feels probably twice as fast as the Pi 3B+, stats suggest 3 or 4 times the speed, either way it's a significant upgrade that's for sure. I tested 240p output to make sure they hadn't messed with the low pixel clocks and it works great, in fact it's a real step up as LewisGamer and Jochen Zurborg from arcadeforge found in detailed testing, turns out the pixel clock is open and free of any restrictions we previously had to work around. This means no more approximations or closest fit resolutions and refresh rates, you'll get it exactly as per the original arcade board

So when will the images be released right? let me get cracking with the new shizz! Not quite that easy I'm afraid, turns out the shiny new graphics core means a lot of recoding for developers of the emulators, the front ends and distros like RetroPie and RecallBox so it might be a month or two before we get something to play with. If you want to get started on testing games and see what the Pi4 can do, I was asked for some instructions for compiling advmame and retroarch so I'll post them below if anyone wants to play, I'm also uploading my test image which is configured to run using a Gert666 but you can edit the config.txt file to switch it to 1080p over HDMI if need be.

You need to disable the new fancy video driver because otherwise nothing will run, launch sudo raspi-config and from the advanced options choose the legacy driver and reboot.

For advmame enter these commands in turn as each completes from a fresh install of Buster Lite:

sudo apt-get install git autoconf automake libasound2-dev libfreetype6-dev zlib1g-dev libexpat1-dev libslang2-dev libncurses5-dev

git clone https://github.com/amadvance/advancemame.git

cd advancemame

sh autogen.sh

./configure

make -j3

sudo make install

The make command will take around 20 minutes to complete but once you're done you need to initialise advance mame by entering the command advmame and press enter. That generates a folder - /home/pi/.advance (notice the dot, that means hidden in linux, use ls -al to see hidden stuff) - you then need to either copy your roms to /home/pi/.advance/rom or add a new path in the /home/pi/.advance/advmame.rc file. Launch a game with advmame <romname>

Retroarch is a similar process:

sudo apt install build-essential libasound2-dev libudev-dev

curl -LO 'https://github.com/libretro/RetroArch/archive/v1.7.7.tar.gz'

tar -zxvf v1.7.7.tar.gz

cd RetroArch-1.7.7

./configure --enable-alsa --enable-udev --enable-floathard --enable-dispmanx --disable-opengl1

make -j3

sudo make install

Once its done - and it doesn't take nearly as long as advmame - you need to copy the retroarch.cfg file that gets created in the RetroArch-1.7.7 build folder to /home/pi/.config/retroarch folder, overwriting the original, then uncomment and edit the line: video_driver="dispmanx" and this line: core_updater_buildbot_url = "http://buildbot.libretro.com/nightly/linux/armhf/latest/"

You can now launch retroarch with the command retroarch from a command line. You can add cores from the menu and configure your directories for your roms and play around with it but it should all run OK.

Add to watch list.

Come back in 3 months and see if I can bribe chunksin to put me a pi4 together :)

I used to get excited with playing with the PI, but last image I got I had someone on ebay put together a custom 128gb image, and I must say it was an awesome and a lot better than the I could of done even with the time !

I am personally not bothered with Dreamcast stuff but be ineteresting if they can emulate that better, as I own a hacked one, Also N64 not that fussed either f I was honest. Never really liked the n64 when I had one.

My main use is on the TV with the kids playing 3 player games.

Here is a link to my barebones test image, I'll be updating this as I work towards getting a full image sorted, this link will always point to my latest Pi4 upload: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1nksO0MG3LaPSB8d3XmGTgfHayFVwO5uq

Chunksin, Is this something along the lines of your (Win 7) Groovy Arcade image but for the raspberry Pi 4?

If so do you already have something similar for Pi3b, I'd be eternally grateful if you have an image you could link to.

Not much has happened on the Pi4 front, there are various blockers in the path of a 15khz image for the Pi4, mainly issues around resolution switching. One positive bit of progress is I've managed to get the latest version of mame (215) compiled and running from the console using the new video drivers in 240p. Performance is pretty good, better than I'd expected, if you'd like to try for yourself, my notes are below and will work on the latest Buster Lite image (the mame compile takes around 4 hours), I'll upload my working image later this week.

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade

Compile and Install SDL 2.0.11

===================

sudo apt-get install libfontconfig-dev qt5-default automake mercurial libtool libfreeimage-dev libopenal-dev libpango1.0 libgdm-dev libgbm-dev

hg clone http://hg.libsdl.org/SDL

cd SDL

./autogen.sh

./configure --disable-video-rpi --enable-video-kmsdrm --enable-video-x11 --disable-video-opengl

make

sudo make install

wget http://www.libsdl.org/projects/SDL_image/release/SDL2_image-2.0.5.tar.gz

wget http://www.libsdl.org/projects/SDL_mixer/release/SDL2_mixer-2.0.4.tar.gz

wget http://www.libsdl.org/projects/SDL_net/release/SDL2_net-2.0.1.tar.gz

wget http://www.libsdl.org/projects/SDL_ttf/release/SDL2_ttf-2.0.15.tar.gz

tar zxvf SDL2_image-2.0.5.tar.gz

tar zxvf SDL2_mixer-2.0.4.tar.gz

tar zxvf SDL2_net-2.0.1.tar.gz

tar zxvf SDL2_ttf-2.0.15.tar.gz

Compile and make each of the above SDL components using the commands below

cd SDL2_xxxxxx

./autogen.sh

./configure

make

sudo make install

cd ..

Compile and Install Mame

================

sudo nano /etc/dphys-swapfile

Change CONF_SWAPSIZE=100 so that it reads CONF_SWAPSIZE=2048

Save and issue commands below:

sudo /etc/init.d/dphys-swapfile stop

sudo /etc/init.d/dphys-swapfile start

sudo apt-get install git build-essential python libsdl2-dev libsdl2-ttf-dev libfontconfig-dev qt5-default

wget https://github.com/mamedev/mame/releases/download/mame0215/mame0215s.zip

unzip mame0215s.zip -d mame

cd mame

unzip mame.zip

sudo nano makefile

Add the following line to the user section:

ARCHOPTS = -mcpu=cortex-a72 -mtune=cortex-a72 -mfpu=neon-vfpv4 -mfloat-abi=hard -funsafe-math-optimizations -fexpensive-optimizations -fprefetch-loop-arrays

Uncomment REGENIE=1 and NOWERROR=1

Uncomment and change DEBUG = 0

Save and close

make -j4

sudo make install

sudo nano /etc/dphys-swapfile

Change CONF_SWAPSIZE=2048 so that it reads CONF_SWAPSIZE=100

Save and issue commands below:

sudo /etc/init.d/dphys-swapfile stop

sudo /etc/init.d/dphys-swapfile start

Chunskin, been a long time since the 4 came out, have retropi and everything else moved on. I.e is it worth an upgrade now compared to the pi3b. Mine would be just plugged into tv with a couple of xbox controllers, not for my cab.

Is there a decent pre-done image out there. I triple boot at the moment as I always found Kodi in the pre-done images not that configurable and I use CEC on boot to decide what to boot to.

One of nightmares befoe with 3b is power supply for kodi was always a pain in ass. Got through about 4 different power supplies and hubs before it would play massive film files without the bloody lightening bolt !.

Reluctant to upgrade unless its a significant improvement, as would need new heat synch case as well !

Whats your thoughts ?
