Here's my call on this...
UKVAC has always been an 'unmoderated' open forum, at least it has been for the
best part of 10 years that I've been on it, even before it was on an automated
list server .
It's moderation is really only there to stop spammers and allow people to
actually join the list in the first place (which is the reason we had a bulk move
to UK-VAC).
Now, if you're not sure you can survive in the 'unmoderated' world, you have a
great alternative with the J+ forums. I'm on them, and they're a great bunch of
guys. But here in the free world, you'll have different experiences and that's OK
too.
Now, your problem with abuse. Yup, maybe it was a bit uncalled for, but I reckon
the best thing for you to do is let everyone else make their own mind up. If you
see someone getting flamed on a list, haven't you sometimes thought 'That guy
flaming sounds like a bit of an ars*'. Maybe that's what people are thinking now?
I tell you what though, I bet people are also thinking, 'That guy complaining
like hell about being flamed is now being a bit of an arse himself.' Why not try
thinking this, 'Hey, what the hell, I'll see D at the next meet and see how it
goes.' He'll probably buy you a beer...he's like that. We're ALL like that on here.
You do have a choice to be on here. If you don't take it all too seriously,
you'll be fine. Life really is too short to get too wound up by this. Come on
Paul, take a chill-pill, forget all about it and put it down to experience.
As it happens, I do think that the original email was a bit out of order. But to
be honest, I can't remember why it was posted in the first place and it's only 1
message in 1000's. I'm never going to read it again, so who cares?
