[ukvac] Repait logs
If anyone's interested, i've started to put some of the repair logs
that i've been keeping over the last couple of years up on my site.

(Which is http://www.guddler.co.uk in case anyone didn't know!)

I've always tried to write them in such a way that they are
interesting to read, and for me to write (well, for the geek inclined
amongst us anyway!) and i try not to just say "part X fixed problem Y"
but rather explain how i arrived at that conclusion where i can.

I must stress before anyone rolls around the floor laughing too much,
that 1) i don't try to hide any mistakes i make - there are a few
"doh's" and "notes to self" in there and 2) some of these repairs go
back to when all i knew how to do was swap chips out. Some of the
things i took ages over fiinding may have been very obvious to someone
reading them. We all start somewhere, even if we won't all admit it.

The whole point is that if any 1 person finds just 1 thing that they
didn't know, or it helps 1 board get fixed then it's been a useful
exercise.

Besides, my webspace doesn't get used for much else these days )

More to come, but so far:

Rally X
Asteroids
Galaxian
Exodus

Enjoy,
Martin.

Martin they have indeed made some interesting reading.

I do like the fact that you admit your mistakes as you go along :)

The Asteroids where you stuck 8v down the 5v line ..... I actually
use that method to kill rams that are intermitant and impossible to
trace ... (used this on 3 Jedi boards that would not go into test
mode, but would play .... cranked up the voltage for a couple of secs
and killed a couple of 2148's .... replaced them and test mode came
up :)

Re: [ukvac] Re: Repait logs
LOL!! Trust me - that was not intentional.

I have actually found Asteroids boards to be damn resilient, so it's
rather puzzling as to why the bloody things go wrong so often. I
remember another similar time when an AR went supernova. And that was
for long enough for me to measure the voltage.

After repairing the AR, that board just fired straight back up again
without ANY issue at all.

Why is it then that the damn pads will come off for an absolute
passtime? Especially the ones that are just round circles without
tracks going to them. Maybe that's just me though!

Sometimes i wish i kept logs of everything i do. I could have added
monitors, ARII's and a whole heap of other stuff too, but i simply
can't always be bothered. I also (with 1 or 2 exceptions) don't tend
to put anything up for boards that dont belong to me (or Bazfish).

One i found extremely interesting and wish i kept a log of was a
Williams System 7 pinball board. LOTS of faults on that but using
Marvin's guide it was a very enjoyable and more importantly
understandable one to work my way through. Genuinely enjoyed doing
that one.

I really should keep a log of the monitors too since I could really
use having them to refer back to myself since i keep forgetting the
theory :)

Anyway, i'm waffling - glad you enjoyed them. I'll add some more this
evening. I have a phoenix repair somewhere with some very useful info
in it.

Martin.

hehe I should post up a log of my williams system 11 fix. For those
that remember its the one that I posted up pictures of the burnt out
pcb with 4 holes in it :) It's now all patched up and 100% working.
Damn pinball cpus are so much easier to work through, especially as you
mention above, with the help of Marvins excellent pinball guides.
