Hi,
Does anyone have a ridge racer?

Im trying to find out what is wrong with one I am negotiating for purchase...

He is saying it drives RIGHT

If you hold slightly LEFT - DRIVES STRAIGHT

Ok that just sounds like a cantering issue, which if it anything like the sega's...I feel its straight forward.

My concern is...

When it pulls right (the car) he says the FFB MOTOR is constantly pulling right...

This sounds like when a sega drive board is goosed.

Anyone know for sure what could be up? or advice?

Are the FFB boards available frequently?

thank you for any support/help!

Well, if you can straighten up the car so it's driving forwards but the FFB is still pulling it to one side then that could be a fault on the FFB board with a failed stuck on driver transistor, or anything inbetween that and the IO board on the back of the boardset cage. There are some opto-couplers on the FFB board, I've had those go before on other stuff. If the pot is off center then it would still mostly work, you'de just have a lot less turning range on one of the sides. There is only one steering pot on these cabs, and the game program controls the feedback position.

Otherwise it might be the cable not being plugged into the FFB properly, it is polarised with side edges, but there's still enough flex in the plastic to plug it in one pin up or down, which may cause one of the directions to be stuck on. I have an RR cab here with working feedback and I've just powered it up with the cable off and the motor stays off. I've seen that on most RR cabs in the wild, either the fuses blow or the operator can't be bothered to fix it, so they just disable it.

I can't imagine it being a difficult board fix if that is the issue. The main worry with RR cabs now is wether they have working 3D graphics or not!

RR doesn't have force feedback!!

Use the test and service switch in the coin door and you can re-calibrate it
(It's in the manual how to do it, you can download it online)

Ensure that the accelerator and brake pedals are released and the steering is in the centre.

Hold down the service switch and slide to the test switch to “ON”. The following screen appears on the monitor display.

ADJUST

STEERING 0000

GAS 0000

BRAKE 0000

To zero the settings press the service switch.

When each number on the right hand side of the items: STEERING, GAS and BRAKE is about “OOOO”, the adjustments are complete.

Set the test switch to “OFF” to return to the Game Screen.

I'm not with the cab and would get martin to pick up.

Im just wondering if I should bother or not.

@lix : Sounds like go for it, and the issue with it hopefully will be easy.

@paulcan69 : are you sure it doesn't? Lix has one and even fixed it.

So I'll see what I can get the seller to try. perhaps @Carvaletingpro technique...

Thanks to every single one of your inputs

Technically, I have a Rave Racer and it does have FFB, but in my experience as an arcade engineer pre-2000 I have definitely worked on a deluxe Ridge Racer cab with a feedback motor, I remember as I can recall the machine being big, heavy and a pain in the arse to work on when you're trying to work in the cockpit area. It didn't have Rave Racer boardset in it but maybe it did have once and the FFB system was left in after a retrofit? Or maybe feedback was an optional extra on Ridge Racer? Certainly had to repair several force feedback systems in my life, and remember coming across cabs with disconnected motors.

My memories of actually playing the game are pretty hazy as I've not played a Ridge Racer coin-op for a long time now. It has all kind of blurred together.

Worst case scenario is that you'll have to disconnect the FFB motor just to make it playable again.

I wouldn't get snotty, he's just trying to help. The manual for the DLX is on here if you scroll down and there's no mention of a motor for FFB. I've just had MAME up and changing the cabinet type from standard to DLX doesn't bring up any new menu for the FFB. There's a site here where the chap mentions that there was a FFB upgrade for Rave Racer that was sometimes put in an old Ridge Racer DLX. The only way you're going to find out for sure what the problem is is to get the cab and go from there.

Firstly that site is known for having massive inaccuracies
Ask anyone on here...?
Secondly read this...

https://330mega.wordpress.com/2016/02/28/rave-racer-force-feedback-retrofit/

RR1 didn't come with it
There is no support for it on the pcb so the pcb cannot send signals to the force feedback pcb which you won't have in a RR1 cab

I have a rave racer cab as well, the jap version had no ffb
But the uk (green/yellow) cab does have it

I was going to retro fit it to my jap rave racer cab but in the end didn't bother
I recently sold the ffb pcbs
I even had all the looms

I own 6 copies of system 22 pcbs
And know lots about them
It's a fav of mine

The reason you remember it being ultra heavy is due to it's bolted to a massive lump of steel
My rr1 is the bastard child of 3 of them
THEY DID NOT COME WITH FFB - I think it's you who are confused

Andy @ arcadeclub has a RR1 and a Rave racer uk version - ask him?

If you worked on one with ffb then it had been converted to rave racer (For which there was an official kit for the deluxe cab)

Finally if you still don't believe me go into mame load up RR1 and RR2 and go into the test menus (You could do that on a pc right now) and you will see no force feedback yes/no option

But you will see that option present in the menu of Rave Racer and Ace driver 1 and 2

Peace

Cheers @paulcan69

Your right, I've said I'm confused...

I Didn't mean to offend - was double checking because somebody saying something doesn't exist when a somebody else says it does. I used perhaps for the reason of clarification.

I thank you again

You are making me less confused and giving me information to conclude.

Its not/wasn't a case of not believing you, I just have contradicting information.

With your explanation you sound like you know what your on about, and I am certainly the one who does not know. I appreciate it greatly.

If one of the springs was knacked would the wheel not sit to the left or right when not in use? I'm assuming it's this one that you're talking about and the wheel is centered?
