I made this little cab about 4 years ago now but I thought i'd post about it here as I still have it and see it everyday when I get out of bed
.
I obviously like building mini cabinets and although the build quality on this one wasn't as good as the 'weenix' cab I made a few months ago (no t-moulding or working marquee etc.) I was still happy with the finished product and that's why I still see it everyday.
This was also made from plywood but slightly thinner stuff than my latest one, I have loads of spare megadrives so I wanted to house one inside a small cabinet
.
The first thing I did with the console was install switches to change the country, the 60htz output mod and the flap mod to be able to play Japanese cartridges. Then I built a RGB scart cable and got a 15" LCD TV from ebay (I think I now have at least 2 spare TV's that i've picked up from Cash Converters/Cash Generator over the years since). The controls are hacked into a 3rd party controller as I didn't want to ruin a Sega pad plus I also had a few of them anyway (Competition Pro ones), so after I was happy everything was running ok I set to work building the cabinet. The control panel and front door both have kitchen cabinet-style hinges that spring into either the open or closed position
. I did originally try staining the wood but it didn't look too great so I then opted for a coloured varnish, I thought It would be cool to have a joystick balltop for the handle on the the front cabinet door and I did the button layout in the style of the 3 button megadrive pad.
So i'll let the construction photo's speak for themself lots of them too!
The console is actually held in place by four raised screws that fit into the screw recess holes on the bottom of the console, it pushes down nice and tight and as it's been moved about over the years it has never become loose. The bottom cabinet is full of boxed games (they are even stacked on top of the console
) I actually bought one the other week that's in there with the rest.
Woodwork was my favorite subject at school and something I actually enjoyed (long time ago now though I left in 91') I still like making stuff though that's unique that I can look back at and say "I did that".
Don't know where they'll end up when I'm gone though, I hope someone will appreciate them.
