Scanning Artwork

Hi Guys

Can anyone give any advise on scanning artwork ?

I've got a bunch of NOS stuff that I want to scan before using so i could get it re-produced later if needed.

I know stuff will ideally need to be vectorised, anyone recommend some software ?

And any tips on scan resolutions etc to get the initial image ?

Adobe Illustrator seems to be the de facto app for vectorising but I'm not sure if they do a lite version. In terms of resolution, I'd suggest going with the maximum native resolution of your scanner (but not anything where it interpolates) for your masters and then making scaled/resized copies for vectoring.

Unless the art has half-toning effects or any fiddly detail then tracing the art to produce the vector will be easier on a lower-res copy, but you can then include the high-res PNGs in the package in case anybody wants to touch up your work.

I'd also save as PNG if possible; I think this will give you the best combination of quality and file size.

After that you have colour calibration, but unless you have some Pantone swatches (google them on ebay and weep at the prices

) then you're probably going to have to do your best guess at the colours and see how close your initial proofs are to the NOS work. It might be worth looking to see if you can find a colour profile for your monitor so you can work with a known colour profile which will allow other people to see the vectored results as you intended, but without a colorimeter you're never going to get perfect reproduction through the scan -> screen -> proof -> print pathway.

software not a problem neither are the colour swatches helps when your dad is a graphic designer, I nearly killed him when he threw out his old swatches.. But he gets the new ones free every year so should have some for my self soon

Just picked up some ID3 artwork and something I've been looking for for 8 years, NOS point blank side art. I brought the last front from delth years ago and have the control panel overlay as well so have a complete set now so I can finally restore my cab to new.

also have some NOS Daytona & Killer instinct artwork that I want to play with as well.

just another one of thoses things I've been meaning to do for years.

at least I've got somewhere to start

OMG! OMG! OMG! If you ever get another spare Pantone chip book can I be first in line to beg for it please?

And I'd also like to join the queue for kneeling down at your feet for the PB art too!

It's been ages since I used Illustrator but I know you can plug in the Pantone codes for each colour so you should be able to make a perfect repro

Scan to production might take a while, but I knew you might want some PB art
