Hi guys,

I'm thinking of getting hold of an old JAMMA cab and making it into a MAME cab - yes, I know a lot of you on here are against that sort of thing, but hear me out :) Does anyone have the dimensions of a standard JAMMA cab? I need it to fit in my hallway without annoying the other half too much, so an idea of size would be great....

Cheers

Appx sizes are 25" Wide, 30" Deep, and 70" High. This is just a rough guideline, there are smaller and larger cabs out there.

Hi,

A JAMMA cab is a MAME cab is done correctly. Most people go the incorrect way by ripping out the guts and sticking an entire pc in it. When you can just buy a JPAC and plug the MAME pc into the JAMMA harness.

That way you can play original JAMMA boards and MAME, without any additional modifications.

Good innit.

Also dont make the mistake of ripping out the original monitor and sticking in a old pc monitor or lcd they will never look as good.

Wow, loads of responses! Not sure about keeping the original monitor, really hate CRTs particularly old ones! They have a nasty habit of biting your knuckles when you're working in the confines of a cab :(

I'm undecided as to whether to get an old cab and refurb it or to just build one from MDF - anyone done this on here?

Building one just seems like too much hard work to me. There are people who've done it, I guess if you're handy with woodworking it's an option, personally I find getting the electronics/software of a MAME setup working takes enough time without having to build the damn wooden box as well :) Personally (and this is what I actually did) I'd recommend just getting an existing working Jamma cabinet with a decent CRT and as Oll suggests just use the Jamma wiring loom to connect your PC using and Arcade VGA and JPAC to hook it up. Advantage is that you can still use it as a reall Jamma cab if you feel like it, this isn't something you can do if you've plonked in an LCD screen.

Cool, are there any ways to use any other video card then an ArcadeVGA? I understand these are just BIOS-modified ATI video cards, so is it possible to hack the BIOS on a standard card? I have a drawer full of ATI cards to play with....

Another thing, if I use a JPAC, can I add additional buttons etc to the cab? I'm thinking of having a 2 player cab with around 6 buttons, plus potentially adding a spinner.

Cheers

You can download a program called soft15k which will make the gfx card output to an arcade monitor. Quite a few cards work with it so worth having a look at that first.

That is so cool! Really got to get cracking on a cab, think I am going to build it from scratch, just need to make the time. Cub monitor eh? I remember the massive static shocks you used to get from those, great fun :)

I didn't use the cub in the end - it wouldn't play properly on certain games. I put a decased vga screen in there in the end with a minimal mame setup.

Much though it may upset the purists, I may well go for a TFT simply because I have a load of them, they weigh less, and they're a lot easier to fit :) The only potential problem I have is getting the other half to appreciate having a full-size arcade cab in the hallway, that could cost me some shoes :)

As long as you're happy with it, who cares?
I personally find that the lcds I have toyed with look too washed out and the screens are never as shiny as a glass tube.

I know what you mean about mounting though - especially if you don't have access to wood/metal working tools.
