[ukvac] Slightly OT: Best graphics card for a Mame cab?
I know its a bit subjective, and OT (apologies) but assuming I'm
building a cocktail Mame cab with a PC monitor installed, what
graphics card would everyone recommend?

Obviously something cheap which supports a good range of resolutions
is desirable. If it matters, I'm more interested in earlier (pre 85)
games.

Also, should I look for any particular type / size of monitor,
assuming installation in a standard Taito cocktail? (Out of interest,
what size monitor is standard in these cabs?)

Cheers people
Shaun

Re: [ukvac] Re: Slightly OT: Best graphics card for a Mame cab?
Really? Is this the case? I thought it would be a reatively tight fit with the case, but overall not too much of a problem (don't have a cab here to look at so going only from memory). If it helps, I was intending to gut the cab completely and start from an empty shell - will that give enough space? Don't like the idea of messing with removing casing etc, especially as I don't know what I'm doing at all with this stuff!

As for the 14" monitor: I don't think it will be a problem to find a spare 2nd hand one through contacts and computer fairs etc.

As for what I'm running, the intention was to go DOS Mame / Advance mame all the way, with Windows only installed for maintenance reasons.

Any more thoughts? I didn't realise this was gonna be so complicated!

Standard monitor size in a Taito cocktail is 14", but you'll
have a pretty hard time getting a standard 14" PC monitor
into a Taito cocktail. You will certainly have to remove the
case, which means that you'll have to find a way to mount
the monitor PCB in the cab. Also, bear in mind that there
isn't a lot of clearance in a cocktail between the monitor
neck board and the bottom of the cab.

RE: [ukvac] Re: Slightly OT: Best graphics card for a Mame cab?
mine had dosmame (an old version that still supports 8 bit modes) and
arcadeos.

it ran arcadeos from the autoexec file in windows 98, so it started before
windows does. you can then use the machine and play games, but if you wanted
to update files, then you exit arcadeos and it boots windows 98, which then
shares it's drive via the network card in the cab, so I can just copy new
roms / mame.exe's etc across.

I say had, because at the moment the PC board has been removed, since I will
probably move the setup across to a cabaret cabinet I have, although I'm
tempted to use a X-Box in that instead of a PC (not totally decided yet,
will probably do if my trade of an arcade board for an X-Box happens!)

So total setup was ...

VGA Monitor (case removed as pictured, otherwise the plastic got in the way
of the lid!)

Celeron 366 board with ATI Rage pro graphics card, 96Mb ram, 1 Gig hard disk
and a network card

Ipac card to interface controls to keyboard, also allows you to plug in a
keyboard for windows controls

and of course, everything runs off 240v, so I put a double socket in the cab
