super hang on audio probs

hi guys
just got a sega super hang on cab , but it has really annoying sound issue there is a loud hum from the speakers when game is running and it gets worse when the music or sound effects kick in , im thinking its the sound amp any help advice would be great

i have tried another pcb i bought as a spare and it had the same faults so sure i can rule out the gaame pcb hers a pic of the amp

Did you check the 12v paul? worth replacing those caps, good you narrowed it down to the audio board

I would imagine the Amp board is faulty - standard Atari part that! Obviously a SHO that was built at the Atari Ireland factory.

The hum to me would suggest the Amp is receiving 12v, recap the PCB and change the Amp on the heat sink.

Same amp that's fitted to my Ireland built OutRun upright. Might have a working spare or at least a partial worker you could try or rob parts from?

Had similar issues with my SHO which has the same amp board, had to change the TDA2030's and recap it and its been fine since.

Hum would usually indicate ground getting into the speaker + loop so definitely start by changing the 4 big caps (3300uf/35v IIRC) and see if that helps, check the continuity underneath as well as it could easily be a corroded trace.

Congrat to the cab, hope you have more luck with that now. BTW got my f355 / outrun2 cabs force Feedback working... it is very interessting, ffb works without midi cable, with the 2 Standard f355 ffb pcb´s... now i Need artset and a few other outrun 2 stuff...

yes there was a amp with that stuff but I sold it with the pcb , wish I had kept it now as I have a outrun cab . it is a different model amp to the one in the super hang on cab anyway , good to hear you got f355 working cheers paul

ah, thought it was the same style amp by the outrun set!? anyway sad you sold it mate... yeah glad my racer cab is working 100% perfect, now the artwork and a few parts. can you bring me Connections here for outrun2 parts please paul?need this start / view Panel and an 2. shifter...

ok guys bit of a update but not made any progress

I have tried another sound amp I got from gary which got rid of the loud hum but sound and music was distorted , I have also replaced the caps in my original amp but made no difference

on close look inside the cab near the power supply and transformer its looks like it had a bit of a bodge job around the fuse block looks like some wires have been botched together ?

it would be really helpful if anyone could take a few clear pics of the inside of there cab around this area so I could see what goes where it should , many thanks

hi Ronnie +12v is not being used at all only +5 ?? there are afew wires that have been bodged together that are coming from the transformer that lose the sound completely if I disconnect them

im not much good with this sort of thing truth be told don't want to end up making it worse

well this is what im thinking mate. maybe that's why its making that noise?? but I could really do with seeing where these wires are supposed to go.

Pretty sure the amp gets 12V AC from the transformer, via one of the fuses on the power board (F2 possibly? Can't remember..).

This is why you don't see the 12V rail on the switcher populated, as that's 12V DC.
