Can you hear any sounds etc? Have you ruled out the monitor?

First thing would be to check you are getting 5 volts to game pcb.

Super monaco GP, uses the sega x board hardware, shared with After Burner/ Thunder Blade etc.

The X board uses a battery powered processor, which after a number of years, can go dead, and the game board will not boot.

You can fit a normal 6800P12 processor, and you will need to then install a set of unencrypted roms. Before It gets to involved, I would check the game board, is getting 5 volts first.

Thanks chopper:) I’ll check that tomorrow. I’ve been led to believe it’s the board but I’m no expert. There’s no sound or anything just the lines.

It is, took a punt with it really, will have to convert it if the pcb can’t be fixed. Such a rare cab so it kind of grabbed me :-0

Very brave taking this on! Wish you all the best - looks like an incredible bit of kit if you can get it working.

But please don't convert it!!!

If I was you, I would be very tempted with the working upright that is currently on Ebay (and no, it's not mine!)... it's so much easier to fix a machine if you have a working machine to help you diagnose issues...

And once you have your deluxe working, just re-sell the upright!

Noooooooooo please don't convert it.

I am sure you will get out of trouble with the board.

Is the rest of the cabinet internals there. compressor etc?

We need loads of pictures.

I have an upright myself but I do love that deluxe.

Keep us up to date with what ever is going on with it.

Thanks chaps, I’ll keep you updated ;-)
I really don’t want to convert it either, but if all else does fail it may happen.

Is the monitor working?

I spoke to the seller at the time and he told me the compressor was working

and complete.

What was your plan B, put a PC in it?

Monitor appears to be ok, we posted the image of the monitor on a crt forum and a good few came back and said that’s a board fault. Compressor and tyre reservoir are in great shape. Converting it to pc is the worst case option tbh.

I would have a word with mark at Retro Clinic.

http://www.retroclinic.com/

He is the man for PCB of that era, Outruns and such.

On top of the battery processor on the pcb, there will be a sticker with a code on it, something like 317-0126?

I have a copy of the unencrypted rom set, for the air drive cabinet, and should have a spare 6800P12 processor somewhere. It just needs 2 eproms swapping out.

I'm not saying this will fix the board, but there's a good chance the board may have just suicided. It's the easy option, before you start sending the board off for repair.

These boards are very hard to find, and finding a replacement may prove difficult.

Hopefully once you have verified the 5 volts, then let us know.

I would approach Mark first as suggested.

If you ever find yourself in South London area, I have a bench setup to work on Sega PCBs, and test ROMs that might help diagnose what is wrong with the board - if it is completely dead. You can always pop by with the PCB and we can see if we can get it to do anything.

If you can't get the PCB fixed, then you should consider a MAME setup that avoids butchering any of the cab wiring. Check out this thread for an AfterBurner example:

Thanks, much appreciated. I’ve not had a minute yet to look at it any further. Could I post it to you? And of course I’ll pay you to repair the board, gotta try and save this bit of arcade heritage if poss :)

I don't generally fix PCBs, as my success rate on boards of this era is not particularly great - there are too many custom components that aren't fixable. I am building up a few spares here and there, so maybe this situation will change in the future.

A few people to approach would be Retroclinic or Ace.

Whatever you do, don't butcher the cab to the point where you can't reinstall the PCB cleanly once you find a worker or get it fixed. You'll regret it!
