[ukvac] TECH atari power supply voltage selector
Hey all,
can anyone tell me what pins should be connected on an atari
power supply to run off 240v - the power supply is from a tempest,
the one with the zig zag connector, rather than the angled off
edges (if that makes any sense). I tried copying the pinouts from
an asteroids power supply, but that doesnt work (the live input line
isnt connected anywhere).

Cheers
Gav

Nope - no use - i need to know the exact pin postions, tempest
manual only tells you what colour to use - i dont have a voltage
selector plug, if anyone knows, or could look at theirs and let me
know....

Cheers

Also if anyone knows what chip lives at position 8F on a Star Wars
AVG board id be grateful - manual says its an 8 bit AD convertor -
but a number would be useful.

cheers

ok, grab the schematics off of spies.. that will tell you all you need to
know. If the manual doesn't, the schematics most definately will. Doesn't
take a genius to work that out.

i'm referencing from a starwars power block, but the plugs should be the
same...

Brown (240v) plug
9->7
8->1
4->3

enjoy,

Andy

Ok..

First thing first. You definately have a voltage selection plug. the
manual also tells you (apart from the colour of the selection plugs)
that Tempest has a domestic and a international power block. To quote
the manual.... (page 4)

"Before plugging in your game, check your power supply. If the supply
doesnt have voltage selection plugs and a connector at J3, then the
game oNLY operates on any voltage between 105 & 135. if the supply
has the coloured voltage selection plugs, make sure that the right
one.. blah blah"

Now in my US Tempest I have a connector at J£ but no voltage
selections hanging off so I've presumed that I have a domestic power
supply and have never attempted a power conversion :(

The plugs are actually shown on sheet 1B of the wiring diagram which
can be downloaded from
http://www.spies.com/arcade/schematics/atari/Tempest1B.tiff
But for completeness I list them here:

GRAY WIRING (200v)
9 - 7 connected
8 - 2 connected
5 - 3 connected

BLUE WIRING (220v)
9 - 7 connected
8 - 2 connected
4 - 3 connected

BROWN WIRING (240v)
9 - 7 connected
8 - 1 connected
4 - 3 connected

VIOLET WIRING (100v)
9 - 7 connected
8 - 5 - 2 connected
6 - 3 connected

YELLOW WIRING (120v)
9 - 7 connected
8 - 4 - 1 connected
6 - 3 connected

Now just to be completist :p The wiring on the socket J3 that the
plug connects to is:
1 BN/BK 120V Tap [winding 1]
2 R/BK 100V Tap [winding 1]
3 OR/BK COM (0V) Tap [winding 1]
4 BK/Y 120V Tap (joins Y/BK wiring on the block
at connector TB1 to the spare
120v output outlet) [winding 2]

5 V/BK 100V Tap [winding 2]
6 W COM (0V) TaP (joins BU/BK wiring on the
block at connector TB1 to the
spare 120v outlet) [winding 2]
7 W/BK 110V Tap %/- 5% [winding 2]
8 BK to connector J2-4 (to On/Off & interlocks it seems)
9 WHT to connector J2-5 (to On/Off & interlocks it seems)

My recommendation is that you check the voltages at each pin on J3
BEFORE attempting the power conversion. If you dont match the
volatges anywhere then I'd presume you have the Domestic power block
and you'll be damned as I am ;P)

Finally, the schems say Use a 4AMP 250V SB Fuse at F1 with 220/240v
Euro power wirings. The schems also state (and ALWAYS worth reminding
people) The US power cord is Black (AC), Green (Gnd) and White is
Nuetral), i.e. Brown, Green/Yellow and Blue is our terms :p Why black
is hot is still werid to me when white seems so natual for live)

Hope it helps. let me know how you get in

Regards
Rav

Re: [ukvac] TECH atari power supply voltage selector
that would be a DAC-08

enjoy.
