Did this mainly for giggles - but also because my Tempest developed a fault. Was pretty sure 6100 had gone pop, but it's always useful to have some means of assuring that the Tempest PCB itself is not at fault. As I don't have an X Y scope I thought I'd have a go at rigging up a harness to display Tempest on a GO5:

Not the greatest shot in the world as monitor has blue overlay (usually use this in Asty DLX cabaret) and is in direct sunlight.

The pots on Tempest PCB need adjustments - and for some reason I have a mirror image. I'll play around with it later today and see if I can get a better shot of it.

Tempest PCB will output a monochrome signal without modification - just need to add a pin to the harness to access the signal. GO5 is taking power from an Asty DLX cabaret, and video from Tempest cabaret.

Anyway, interesting experiment if nothing else ....

Looks cool. I have a wg v2000 that show a mirror image in my asteroids cab. I was told that pin 19 needed to be shorted to ground. Would this be right?

Cheers,
Steve

I would imagine both your monitors have come from an Asteroids Deluxe upright or a Battlezone - which uses a mirror.

Well spotted

Couldn't have been the inversion as that's done by adding an extra ground on the edge connector to the PCB so that wouldn't occur in a cabaret.

I presume other vector games can be run in b&w too?

Yep, I used to have a black and white Asteroids monitor bolted on top of my upright Star Wars and it kept up with the drawing speed fairly well. I built a small buffer amplifier with some opamps on veroboard for the X and Y signals, and just used the Z output from the Star Wars for the blanking I seem to remember.

I might have a photo of it somewhere if I can find it, but it was about 1988!

Edit: Found it! Just wondering whether I'll drink enough tonight to post the other one with a very young me on it.

How do I switch the x y on my wg v2000 to work in the asteroids then?
What do I need to do?

Cheers,

Hey Steve

I think in this instance, the Tempest PCB was hooked up with X and Y the wrong way - hence the mirror image.

In your case in a cab with an original harness, the grounding route is the correct method to follow.

Do you still have this Star Wars?

Hi no it is a normal asteroids board in a normal asteroids cab. I got the wg v2000 monitor from alpha1 so not sure what cab it came out of originaly.

Cheers,
Steve
