To clean……or not to clean……

I have just removed a Nanao MS2933 from a Sega Blast City. The inside of this cab is quite frankly the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen. You know those spores in “The Last of Us”…..? Well, I swear those things are breeding inside!

The monitor and chassis is caked in this grim layer of hairy black soot. I think it’s basically just normal dust which has over time, built up, but as it stayed there, cigarette smoke and tar blackened it.

I started cleaning with a small dry artist’s paint brush to dislodge the dust. Obviously starting from the highest most central point, working down and outwards. To be fair, the chassis actually has cleaned up really well…..except when I blasted all the dust out with compressed air, a huge (and I mean huge) stain of treacle-like goop (potting compound from the 750-A1) has covered a huge portion of the board - it was already there. It’s an old stain/leak.

Mmm…..delicious….free goop for anyone?

The chassis works fine even with the goop. I’m not concerned about that, but seeing as I was in cleaning mode, I thought about trying to clean the goop off. My brain says “just leave it, it’s not hurting anyone,” but my heart says “clean it, for the love of God, cleeeeaaaan ittttt!!”

Should I bother? I’m a firm believer of “if a chassis isn’t broken, don’t try and fix it!”

Clean up job looks really good but that goop stain…..is pretty large! It’s dried and feels like candle wax (except it won’t scrape off cleanly, it’s sticky).

What would you, my learned brothers of the community do?

Leave it be, or clean it? And if so, is IPA the stuff to use?

the potting agent will eventually rot the legs of components, the coil it leaked from should be repotted. i use a blade and ipa to clean it away, removing any components affected before doing so

Thanks for the advice Gunblade.

Why is the potting compound needed?

Are there modern-day replacement components that don’t need this stuff that I could replace the component with?
