Not so sure I do - the signal to noise level was poor as hell back then. Someone only had to send one mail and there would be 20 replies that more or less just amounted to flame wars.

We did earn ourselves a certain reputation, and while it's absolutely not justifiable any more, I'm not going to pretend that it hasn't ever been justified!

Yeah I'm happier with less sh*te to tbh. I wouldn't have time to wade thru 1000+ messages a month to find the few interesting ones that I'd really want to read. Take a look at some other sites crap post ratio for a reminder :)

Dan

P.S In the last month there have been 240ish posts so it's quieter but not *that* much :)

I just had a look at the archives out of curiosity, it seems a lot of posts went un-replied.

I might have posts going back to '97 at home somewhere if I haven't lost them to hard drive failures over the years, any interest ?.

As a reasonably new member, I think that the replies here are far more useful than some of the
replies on, dare I say it jamma+.

The membership here, in all honestly, seems far more knowledgeable, helpful and realistic in pricing stuff.

This may not be the busiest forum, but for me, if I need an answer or need to buy something, it is the only realistic place to source stuff.

Maybe it is my strange taste in the more obscure machines.

Be proud ...

ok so twice the post count whilst keeping the quality of the posts.

twice the active userbase would be nice too.

Ive noticed that recently others are passing through here more and more often.

I have to agree with DanP,when i sign-in i dont have to wade throught countless posts of sh*t.

No heavily moderated posts/discussions.

no power crazy rulers.

And the Tech side here is the dogs bollox period!

You could very easily increase your user base using google ads, and in this instance, I would suspect, at very little cost per click.

You could also easily target members that do not use the site regularly via email and encourage them to post. I suspect that you would easily increase traffic.

All pretty standard stuff, but importantly, at very little cost.

Depends on how serious you are really ....

Your competition is not that sophisticated is it

I've come to be quite philosophical, accept and even like the fact that there are two very different (yet similar) UK arcade forums. (Ok, there is AO and Shmups, but they're targeted at different aspect of vac in my opinion).

So there's a busy one and a not so busy one. One's more technical, one's a bit more banter. Each have their merits. I'm not sure there needs to be any consideration of rivalry or competition, as actually I think each forums pitches at a different aspect of the vac market so to speak.

It's not like Coke and Pepsi who are fighting for market dominance. It's more like milk and orange juice. You can have either, or both as part of your breakfast, but you don't really pick one over the other or substitute one for the other, if that makes sense

?

For example, I like JAMMA+ because it's busy with all sorts going on, silly banter and things and I like UKVAC because it's quieter and more focussed and there's lots of solid technical help. I like milk on my cereal and a glass of orange juice on the side. It's all very easy really.

And I bet I'm not the only one who feels that way.

Wow, my first post at last, but I had to say, nicely summed up!

Edit: Or, my second post, it would appear...

I have just checked and I have posts starting from the 10th of Feb 1997 onwards, let me know if they are of any interest for the archive ?.
This dates back to the days when all emails were received by XYman and forwarded on, manually I believe

Funnily enough, we were discussing stuff like this on the AO IRC channel earlier on today, and everyone was of the same opinion: no need to promote or push the community bigger as all it'll do is increase the number of, erm... less useful members...

We're happy not to be #1 in Google rankings for relevant searches, and prefer the site to be promoted via word of mouth

I have not been long on here and was recommended by a friend on j+.
At first it was strange to see very similar people on different forums targeted at the same hobby, but the longer I spend browsing you see they are different and as Steve has said, there is room for both as they each have their own merits.

I agree that the site does seem to be gaining members recently and so 'word of mouth' is starting to work.

I can't comment on the technical side of the forum, as I haven't posted anything there as of yet...
/me off to read the technical forum...

i dont post here (apart from now obviously!) because my first impressions are that it is a forum for the more 'serious' collector, rightly or wrongly it just appears more technical than certain other forums i go on. Thats not to say it is a bad thing, there is just less 'noise' as it was put earlier.

Perhaps as i get more into dedicated cabs and move away from candy's and mame then i can be more 'active' but i have certainly found plenty to just read so far which means it is an essential visit at least once a day...

What I like about UKVAC is that I can come here, find information quickly and get things sorted. Not to say I don't like J+, but the regulars can get you the info you need quick.

Both sites also have bargain sales items!

I think maybe doing a similar thing to J+, close certain areas to people who aren't members may be a good, makes them want to join. But it also can put people off. Swings and roundabouts!
