RE: [ukvac] Inlay cards
<long post fair warning>
Excuse me Simon.
Examine your scans and compare to the one in the photo on MY site..
It took me a couple of days to do the restoration on this repro card,
and that was about 4 years ago, these cards have been available for
sale, from me since way back then, and there should be people on this
list that would attest to that fact, having purchased them.
If you compared my card to your scan, you would find a definite
difference, because the card I was working from was faded to fuck, and
had huge scratches in it. I know for a fact I got some of the colours
wrong on the enemy spaceship dudes, because my master was almost white
at that point with no discernable colours. The end result was a very
nice looking card, in the absence of the real thing.
I think your scans that you sent out to loads of people was a very kind
thing to do, but don't go pointing fingers, especially not at me who has
NEVER had to steal someone elses work to make a living. I have a huge
instruction card collection, and have been collecting videogames and
paperwork since '97. While you found some rare instruction cards and
paperwork, there was only 2 or 3 I didn't already have.
By the way, I'm defending my corner now, but you can bet that your
generosity WILL be taken advantage of by someone else, and I expect you
may see repro cards on ebay at some point, by some other little toerag
who's reading this list. Its not the first time this has occurred, and
it sure as hell wont be the last, but don't be so quick to point
fingers.
If you try and do anything for free in this hobby, you have to expect
someone else to take full advantage of it, and profit from it.
I'm not being funny, but who do you think dumped the roms in the first
place for lots of these old games, and put them out there for free?
People like me.. We see rom CD's on ebay that people sell for profit.
Who sourced, bought, and laboriously scanned original game manuals at
high resolutions, and pdf'd them, and let them go out for free? People
like me.. We see manuals CD's on ebay that people sell for profit.
Who sourced, bought, and laboriously scanned original video game flyers
at high resolutions, submitted them to TAFA, or put them on their own
website and let them go out for free? People like me.. We see these
flyer scan on those very same manual CD's on ebay that people sell for
profit.
Who spent hours and hours, days and days labouring over repairing pcbs,
power supplies and monitors, and gives out free advice that helps
someone else fix their game in minutes? People like me. That person can
now sell their working machine for 10x the price they just paid for it,
they profit from it, under the guise of 'collecting'...
But do you hear people like me complaining about it? Nope. If you do
something for free in this hobby, fully expect somebody else to profit
from it... if you live by that understanding, you wont go and get all
het up when you see someone else making money from your work.
I put my time into this hobby for other reasons, for reasons of
preservation, and the general merriment of others, and of course most
selfishly, to amuse myself. I know people will profit from it, but who
cares at the end of the day as there are more to things in life than
just money.
