I managed to get GA2 working but it is unplayably slow. I am still on 3.5 as I hate having to reconfig everything.

Does it run better on 3.6 at a playable speed?

I'm not sure if there was any speed difference although there was an update to MAME078.

What's your 5v at? Pi3 is greedy for 5v and performance can drop off pretty badly if it's low. 5.1v should be fine for the board so you could try bumping it up a bit if it's at 5v exactly. Measure at the JAMMA end or a spot on the board, not at the power supply to account for drop.

If that doesn't help I'm not sure whats up as GA2 runs good for me in MAME078 (maybe not perfect but I've never even seen the real game running to judge it).

Its a stable 5.06 most of the time however I will try 5.1 tonight and see if it makes a difference. I also notice really variable performance on Thunderblade so hopefully a voltage boost will fix that too

So I boosted the voltage as suggested and it totally did the trick for GA2. Its actually playable now
It has a few sprite errors with the shadows and sections that scroll vertically but overall its decent. Does anyone else get these errors?

The only games left which still do not perform as wanted are Thunder Blade, Galaxy force 2 and afterburner. Thunderblade seems to flucuate in speed, which is particularly noticable with the sound as it sounds like speeding up and slowing down a vinyl record. Galaxy Force 2 is a bit of a mess so seems far less compatible.

for some reason GA2 doesn't work at all for me irrespective of which folder the zip file is in, i must check my voltages.

also, the return to menu hotkey doesn't seem to work anymore, even though i started from scratch and decompressed all the files onto the sdcard before copying the roms back on.

has the community come together to create a list of what games work best in which folder/ emu? that would be most helpful. i wanted to play some pit fighter and i think i had the file in the mame4all folder. a splash screen said that later levels don't work properly, and indeed the game reset when i got to the 3rd character? i tried moving the file into one of the other folders but it didn't work at all. is that the process? keep moving the file until i find one that works? or should i have the same file in every folder?

Interesting the hotkeys arn't working anymore for you. Would you mind going into detail about it? Have you updated from 3.5 to 3.6? (in which case the combo changed) I'm curious about whats going on here...

MAME4all is the oldest version of MAME you may have more luck with pit fighter in a later version due to the emulation becoming more accurate/complete. The same exact roms may not work in all the emulators due to slight changes made overtime with romsets. Some games seem to work in every version of MAME using the one romset but a lot will be missing parts or have names of parts that have changed over the years. Check out clrmamepro or romcenter to help manage your roms. There are some datfiles included in the user manual folder that should work with either program.

No need to put the same file in every folder, that will just make it appear a lot of times in your game list. For best emulation quality you want to run the games in the newest MAME that will run them well. Sometimes the performance of MAME seems like doesn't make sense, eg. MAME 0.172 runs CPS2 games perfectly but struggles with Frogger. If you just want to play and have most things work Advmame is a pretty good all rounder, MAME 0.078 is getting pretty good now too although is a bit older than advmame (which is based on 0.106). On a pi3 MAME4all isn't that necesary, it's based on 0.037 and is very old and has the worst emulation of all the emulators included (but it's nice and fast on a pi1).

There's a work in progress 'where should I run this rom' spreadsheet here:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1mgzWFz9rOsjDTKLy0lq_Mab9D1-NrojXRw1yf9GdWoY
it's very far from complete. Feel free to add to it. Hopefully it will improve over time.

Use of larger size MicroSD Cards

What are people doing for larger MicroSD cards and larger romsets - For instance i have the 3.6 image burned onto a 64Gb card and the default size of boot is around 3.5Gb. So what are people doing are they :

1) extending the boot partition (fat32) so files can still be transferred by windows and the scripts etc just carry on working

2) extending the root partition and changing config files etc? - and prob using ssh tools to copy files ?

3) Doing nothing as they are happy with the current size ?

I was thinking of doing a symlink to /boot/roms from an area on the root partition but I don't believe you can with a fat32 filesystem

I recommend moving the second partion to the end of the card and resizing /boot to fill the rest. You will need to copy the contents of /boot before resizing and copy it back after as it will be destroyed during the filesystem work. As long as you only move the second partition it's contents should survive.

thanks for sharing that document, i'm sure it'll be super useful.

i am on version 3.6 (which looks great by the way). can you confirm with me what's the key combo to exit to the menu? i thought it was player 1 start key with one of the player 1 buttons (was it 3?) i tried all of them anyway and none seems to work. thanks for your aftersale support.

default combos for 3.6 are basically the same as Ultimarc use:
(long hold) P1 START + P2 Start == exit
+ P1B1 == coin
+ P1 joy Down == pause
+ P1 joy Right == MAME menu (no function in non MAME emulators)

I've got this all working- lovely! One minor issue- the music is distorted initially for a few seconds when a soundtrack changes. Is this normal?

If it's a game running in AdvMAME it's normal as the startup of games is fast forwarded and it often distorts the first sound made as it slows back to regular speed.

I forgot to post here... ARpiCADE 3.7 is out (thanks to Cathal for the single file upload):
https://mega.nz/#!MUBHSBhA!GpeuK_wEkGwSNDYCNniAJCmyT2pDWb8ZpzNJMjVkMw4

More consoles supported and a bunch of other tweaks and MAME0181 to have a play with if you like to fiddle about with stuff. Sorry the included instructions are out of date... I'll do some soon.

Unfortunately mega.nz doesn't allow this file to be downloaded as it states 'transfer quota exceeded'.

Is it possible to use another file transfer site?

try the 10 part version found here:
http://www.aussiearcade.com/showthread.php/82475-RaspberryJAMMA-up-to-date-information

I didn't know mega had a quota. My internet connection is pretty terrible, I have to rely on others to upload single file versions. Unfortunately I have to upload in small chunks...
