Just for info, there are two types of blacklight, blacklight
black/blue (which is the one you can see above the control panel),
which makes everything white glow and blacklight white (which is the
one you cannot see below the control panel behind a marquee). It's
important you use the correct type as the BLW emits UV which I've
read can be harmfull to your eyes. At the very least it will give
you a tan! I do know of a local hardware shop to me (surrey) that
can order them in, you'll prolly find a similar shop nearer to you
that can do the same.

Re: [ukvac] Re: Re. question on lighting...

I haven't read the rest of this thread since i'm away working at the moment
but with regards to the "black" blacklights there is a place in Northampton
called Spencers. It's in the main shopping centre and is a place a bit similar
to the gadget shop and also does a lot of film / music novelties / tshirts /
that kind of thing.

They're an American chain AFAIK and more than likely have other branches in
the UK, just that the Northampton one was near where i lived.

Anyway, the reason i mention it is because UV blacklights became all the rage
for the kiddies to have in their bedrooms / bedsits and 'lo and behold the 21"
blacklight fitting that they sold last time i was in there uses an 18" tube.
Replacements of which were being sold by them for something like £9.99 and
were the exact item required for Tron uprights (i actually put "black"
blacklights in both above and below the CP).

Not the cheapest in the world but by far and away NOT the most expensive
either (i've seen them for ass much as £25), and the main point being they
sold them. The things were like gold dust to try and find when i was looking.
I did offer them up for sale on here at one point but noone was interested and
now i'm over 200 miles from Northampton so i ain't offering anyway :)

Yes, also used in Asteroids Deluxe and Battlezone. It basically
looks like a normal white tube but it emits a blue UV light when
powered, same type as used in Sun beds, insect killers, etc, hence
the danger to direct eyeline usage. The black blacklight looks a
dark blue when unpowered and doesn't emit the UV, so it's OK for
direct eyeline use as used in Tron to give the decals and player a
lovely glow when playing :)

Yes, that's the correct tube for Tron (above the control panel),
providing it is 18" long.

I thought the dangerous bulbs were the clear ones the same as in eprom
erasers? Are there dangerous white tubed ones as well then?

Martin.

I'm guessing to double double check you'd have to find out the
wavelength of the UV thats emitted via manufacturers data sheets or
whatever. Cheers, Col
