The best years to be in British Arcades for me was probably 82/83. So you had Dragon's Lair that literally came from nowhere which caused a major fuss, but you also had the overflow of the real classics from the late 70's and 80's still lurking like Asteroids, Defender, Missile Command, Galaxian and all the other big guns.

I found the whole Street fighter era a total anti climax after experiencing the early days.
That’s cheating a bit 🤣,you’ve took from 79-83

Fair enough. A particular arcade here kept lots of classics. I loved them but their day had peaked by 1990. Sometimes I'd be there practically on my own. For someone nearly teenage SF2 brought in an exciting time. It was great. You had your day. 😁

Games did seem to transition from the 'high-score' orientated, infinite waves stuff to games with a fixed ending and more simultaneous multiplayer.
I can see why some prefer one over the other, probably related to what you first experienced.

That was a bit dodgy wasn't it:LOL:

Ok, I would go for 1980, PAC-MAN, Missile Command etc(y)

* edit - I remember the fkn Trakball managed to pinch my small hands back then!! It bloody well hurt also!!! *
80 was a great one ,Pac-Man and missile command are infinitely playable

I have to agree with Pac-Man, the golden age was definetly the best time to be visiting arcades. New game gene's, dedicated cabs specific to the game, none of this JAMMA rubish ;)

I had probably been visiting arcades when on holiday since 76'ish, I would choose 1978 if pinned down to one year only because Space Invaders was released and that was the game changer.

So many seminal years & games released over the years before 1994 but

1994 was a year of Arcade games Renaissance That I would say has not been surpassed.

Marking 3D’s arrival across the
Beat em up
Shoot em up
Racing scene

And 2d still holding its own.

Key Arcade Games Released in 1994:
  • Daytona USA
  • Ridge Racer 2
  • : Tekken /Virtua Fighter 2
  • Super Street Fighter II Killer Instinct
  • The King of Fighters '94 Samurai Shodown 2
  • NBA Jam: Tournament Edition, Virtua Cop
  • Point Blank
The year's highest-grossing games included Daytona USA and Mortal Kombat II in the US, while Super Street Fighter II X and Virtua Fighterdominated in Japan

Golden age was incredible
Though it covered many years.
You would need to be well over 50 to have the best memories

85,86,87 for me ,maybe edged the golden age

Cool I missed a lot of them for one reason or another at the time
Great games ,but obviously don’t have the memories myself
Just glad it was still going then
They were also getting very expensive to play though

Thats just a good year for arcade games ..

My personal best year was
1987 Going to Cinema Superman 4

My arcade was a side room in
Wycombe 6 cinema
87’
Out run
Shinobi
Double dragon
Contra, After Burner, R-Type, and Wonder Boy: Monster Land

Out of them games though I think I only played double dragon that year as I do remeber playing it for first time
And waiting in a cue to play it .
Watching others play to try to get tips .. on grabs , head butts and weapon pick ups .
1987 Was on fire !
Superman 4 stank

Not sure I’ve ever seen superman 4
I must of deleted it from my mind
Some great games there 86 and 87
I could hear most of the soundtracks just reading
Wonderboy in monster land and double dragon ,10 p complete the games .money well spent
Shinobi was another 10 p complete but didn’t take just as long

Shinobi - I was in Poole (Dorset) with a mate down on the quay, there were a couple of Arcades along the front.

I was playing Shinobi and my mate was watching at this point. A group of dodgy looking guys and a couple of girls came in as a group, the Arcade was pretty empty. These guys /girls were hovering and it was obvious they wanted the Shinobi cab. Anyhow, I was wearing tracksuit bottoms. All of a sudden, one of the girls pulled my fkn tracksuit bottoms down, so I was stood there in my boxers playing Shinobi! Anyhow, I had to play it cool and carried on until I finished the game while my mate pissed himself.

After I lost my last life, I casually pulled them back up and strolled off. Obviously, not quite so cool inside as we were outnumbered and I thought a punch up was incoming. I've not seen the guy I was with for many years but I'll bet he hasn't forgotten that day in that Arcade.

Not cool!
