I’m guessing the demand may also have taken them by surprise and they hadn’t locked in enough memory etc for what they now need to produce

I saw one for sale in the shop under HOG the other day for a crazy price ... someone did really well, there!

Oh ... wait ... that can't have been this ... huh ... must have been an OG AES ... 😲

How many people globally pre ordered and paid up front? Maybe 5000?? No idea, maybe 10,000?? Let’s say 5000 went for the $1000 bundle? So they are sitting on a $5 million pile of cash…. 🤨

What now ?
Do we have to just wait ?
Or is cancelling order an option ?
Considering nothing's shipped, I'd be horrified if you couldn't cancel.
I suppose the risk would be they limit any more pre-orders, so you'd miss out when it does finally land.

It is up for pre-order absolutely everywhere, so you'd expect big numbers. Do they actually get the money though, or does it sit with Argos etc until shipping?
I'd assumed they'd rely on their reserves and investment to pay for engineering time and getting a process up to make the ASICs (quite a big outlay).

I cancelled mine before this delay anyway, but they were very quick to get back to me and sort it all out.

It might not be the case now... they might be backed up with cancellations!

Weren't the AI driven chip shortages already in full swing when they announced this thing? 🤔
Yes totally
Well let's be fair. There hasn't yet been a 'full' swing. The broad knock-on effects are still revealing themselves as factories switch manufacturing and product lines close down. Ram might have been almost predictable but the impact on other products a few steps removed has been catching out huge companies.

Well, as they state it's only stopped the mass-manufacture, they should still be ready to show off working prototypes soon in theory.
Probably not a bad move to reassure people it's not the aforementioned phantom console.

Hope so but ASIC chips depend on mass manufacture. God knows the exact details of the delay though.

Debating cancelling for now but the price might go up if I reorder next year. 🤔

I think the cost is in setting up the tooling for the die, but then reeling off small volumes is do-able.
But I suppose if this is all about getting a company to make ASIC then yeah, there won't be a prototype any time soon.
